How SERVPRO Helps: Commercial Duct Cleaning

Do you have too much dust in your building? If a new odor has been flowing through your vents perhaps it is time to consider addressing the air quality in your building. Because it is fairly common for commercial ducts to be made out of metal this post will focus on that.

If your ducts are flex material, you can go to our previous post on residential vents.

  • How SERVPRO Helps: Residential Duct Cleaning

Ducting material is taken into consideration in order to properly inform SERVPRO of Alexandria on what tools will be used to clean them. It is important to keep the structure of the vent as undamaged as possible, although there are exceptions. Having metal ducts will let technicians use a more aggressive approach to properly dislodge any particulates that may have adhered to the internal surfaces.

The rest of the process is fairly similar to that of a flex duct. Our crew will seal off every vent with perforated adhesive sheets so they are easy to remove and won't leave any residue behind. A negative air machine will be attached to the register closest to the return to pull suction on the system. The technicians will then go through each individual vent, or register, and run pressurized air with a 360 degree nozzle and a whip to reach all of those hard-to-get spots. The air nozzle and whip are inserted through the vent which will dislodge and push/pull all debris and dust to the suction point. The debris is captured in the negative air machine which contains a hepa filter. Hepa filters are crucial when trying to trap dust, mold or any other airborne particles that are smaller than the human eye can see.  Once every vent has been addressed, the technician will take a diffuser filled with scented antimicrobial liquid and disinfect the vent thus giving your building a fresh smell.

If you have any questions regarding home duct cleaning, we are happy to answer them. You may contact our offices at (318) 427-7511. SERVPRO of Alexandria is an emergency service company open 24/7.

Have you recently noticed the air quality of your house has been decreasing?

Perhaps it is time to check on your air vents! If you find yourself in need of a deep cleaning, SERVPRO of Alexandria can definitely help get that dust out of those ducts. The most common way of cleaning vents is with a spinning brush, however this may cause some damage considering how harsh some of the bristles can be, especially if your vents are not made out of metal. SERVPRO of Alexandria does a better, quality job by using compressed air keeping your ducts safe.

Our crew will seal off every vent with perforated adhesive sheets so they are easy to remove and won't leave any residue behind. How SERVPRO Helps: Mold Remediation

1/10/2022 (Permalink)

Remember what happens if you don't deal to water damage as soon as it happens or not early enough? Mold starts to grow. If you need a refresher on how to prevent or on how to spot mold, you can always check out our previous posts. There is little we can do to salvage any property that has been affected by mold considering how porous most house materials are. However, we can help get rid of it in a manner that helps keep it from growing any further. Here is some information on how SERVPRO of Alexandria can help CenLa with mold remediation whether it be at your business  or home.

It is not required, but it definitely is beneficial to have an Industrial Hygienist (IH) come into your building and test the growth to determine the source. They will use an independent lab to create a report and protocol. Using this information, SERVPRO of Alexandria can develop a remediation plan. This helps spot the growth with a lot more accuracy, giving our technicians a guideline of what to look for and where. After familiarizing themselves with the protocol, the demolition process begins.

On the other hand, if there is no report and protocol from an IH, our crew members will identify the visible suspicious growth and remediate it accordingly.

Space Heaters in the Workplace

1/3/2022 (Permalink)

With the low temperatures that Cenla is already experiencing, your home might not be the only building that needs some extra help heating up some areas with space heaters. Most likely, your office or workspace might need that extra boost to have a comfortable working temperature. However, just like at home, there are some safety tips you should follow. Depending on the work you do, here are some Do’s and Don’ts you should keep in mind if you have or plan on having a space heater in your area:

Do:

  • Keep any flammable items at least three feet away from space heaters.
  • Turn off space heaters before you leave the room.
  • Supervise any potential children or pets that may be around the area to prevent injuries.
  • Look for a space heater with Underwriters Laboratories (UL) safety mark, signifying that the product was tested for potential safety hazards, as well for units with automatic shut-off features and heating element guards.
  • Keep space heaters away from water sources.
  • Place space heaters on a level surface, and away from walking areas.

Don't:

  • Use space heaters to thaw pipes. Misusing a space heater can increase fire and burn risks.
  • Use a space heater that has broken wires or signs of overheating. In this case, have the unit serviced immediately.
  • Plug a heater into an extension cord. The risk of overheating and catching fire exists if this is done.
  • Use a heater near a sink or in the bathroom.

Remember that safety should be a priority, especially when you are dealing with something as sensitive as an electric space heater. You can find out how to safely put out any small fire on our website. SERVPRO of Alexandria has been a reliable fire mitigation company in central Louisiana. You can count on us for any fire damage restoration. Call us at (318) 427-7511 at any time, any day. Stay warm Cenla, but more importantly, stay safe!

Ice Dams

12/30/2021 (Permalink)

diagram of ice dam on a roof Diagram of ice dam on a roof

During the early months of 2021 Central Louisiana was experiencing some strong winter storms. As a result, our community experienced ice dams. What are ice dams? Literally what it sounds like. An ice dam is a ridge of ice that forms at the edge of a roof and prevents water from draining off the roof. This causes water to refreeze. Because of the ice dam the water is unable to drain properly. It will then back flow through your shingles and into your home causing damage to walls, ceiling, insulation and other areas.

Moisture entering the home from ice dams can lead to the growth of mold and mildew. Check out our blogs on How To Prevent Mold  and How To Spot Mold. If not remediated properly mold  can cause health issues.

So what causes ice dams? Non-uniform roof surface temperatures. When snow goes through high temperatures it will melt into water. When said water slides down and goes through low temperatures (32F) it freezes and turns into ice, creating a frozen ridge on the roof. The dam will continue to grow as the snow keeps melting. However, it will limit itself to the area that is below 32F. The rest of the water remains as a liquid and finds its way through the ceiling into the attic which could lead into exterior walls or ceiling insulation.

If you experience some water damage due to ice dams, don't hesitate to call us at (318) 427-7511. SERVPRO of Alexandria is here and ready to help Cenla!

Fire Drills

12/28/2021 (Permalink)

Fire Alarm on wall Fire Alarm Trigger on Wall

Remember in middle school when fire drills were so much fun because you got to get out of class for a little while? Most likely you didn’t take the drill as seriously back then, and as you grow older they may seem to be a waste of time, diminishing its importance. However, you may not realize that the reason why it seems unnecessary to go through drills is because you have gone through so many and you already know what to do. Meaning, the training has done its job, and it's now just meant as a refresher. Repetition will help with automatic responses.

In the workplace, under law, employers must practice drills in case of emergencies. New hires must be made aware of the procedures, where all the emergency exists, fire extinguishers and meeting places are in the property. Drills are encouraged to be more than once a year but are only required to happen once annually. The more familiar staff is with the drills, the higher the chance they will stay safe and well during an actual emergency.

Regular fire drills will establish the correct procedures, removing panic and uncertainty for all concerned. Practice makes perfect. On the other hand, drill will help employers realize if there are any faults to their plan, if there are any dangers or safety hazards that need to be removed or better designed.

Louisiana has no specific law or regulation requiring employers to conduct fire drills. However, federal standards set by the Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSH Act), which governs Louisiana's occupational safety and health system, require that companies with 10 or more employees have written fire prevention and emergency exit plans in place for each worksite. Employers with fewer than 10 employees may communicate the plans orally. BLR writes about Louisiana Fire Prevention Laws. You can also find the guidelines to the required action plan under OSHA laws.

How SERVPRO Helps: Fire Damage

12/27/2021 (Permalink)

Although after a fire there is no direct emergency to attend the matter, we believe that there is an urgency due to the unsafety regarding the structural damage a fire can cause, along with smoke damage. There are occasions where on top of fire damage, there will be some water damage considering the way the fire was put out. What does SERVPRO of Alexandria do to help Cenla after a fire has been put out? We go through the following steps:

Cleaning

We go through every room and search for soot, which gets cleaned out. Any smoke or flame superficial damage done also gets dealt with by our crew. If the damage is too high, demolition would be the next step.

Demolition

After going through the process of cleaning, there might be some furniture or structure in need to be pulled out, such as carpet, doors, and countertops. Everything that has been so damaged to a point of no return, will be gathered up and reviewed one final time before being disregarded.

Deodorization

After cleaning everything out, and making sure our hard work has been properly completed, we go through this step of deodorization; meaning make it smell good. We take thermal foggers which heat up our oil based scents and keep them there for a bit for the rooms to soak it all up. After a few hours, the property is safe to enter once again. We don’t want your building to smell like fire and smoke when you return, so we do our best to make it breathable. "Like it never even happened."

Our goal is to bring your property back to preloss conditions. At SERVPRO of Alexandria, we understand that there are times where the losses attributed to a fire are tough on our community. We are a respectful team that takes care of these situations with the utmost professionalism. You can count on us to maintain a transparent and honest relationship with you. SERVPRO of Alexandria is here to help Central Louisiana any day, any time.

Different Types of Fire Extinguishers

12/23/2021 (Permalink)

Different types of Fire Extinguishers Different Types of Fire Extinguishers

There are different types of fire extinguishers which are meant for a different type of fire. These have been classified as:

  • Class A: freely burning, combustible solid materials such as wood or paper
  • Class B: flammable liquid or gas
  • Class C: energized electrical fire (energized electrical source serves as the ignitor of a class A or B fire – if electrical source is removed, it is no longer a class C fire)
  • Class D: metallic fire (titanium, zirconium, magnesium, sodium)
  • Class K: cooking fires – animal or vegetable oils or fats

Regardless of the type of fire, there are 4 elements that are always involved; fuel, heat, oxygen, and chain reaction. The purpose of a conventional fire extinguisher is to stop at least one of the elements from being part of the mix and stopping the fire from igniting any longer.

Let’s take a look at these six types of fire extinguishers. With every type of fire there is a different safety concern you should take into consideration when attempting to smother it. Therefore a specific type of extinguisher is necessary and here is why:

  1. ABC Powder Fire Extinguisher
  • An ABC powder fire extinguisher has numerous advantages as it is a multi-purpose extinguisher and is therefore one of the most common extinguishers to have on hand.
  • A powder extinguisher sprays a very fine chemical powder composed most commonly of monoammonium phosphate. This acts to blanket the fire and suffocate it.
  • Powder extinguishers are effective for class A, B and C fires, since it is not an electrical conductor and since it can effectively break the chain reaction in a liquid or gas fire, something a water extinguisher cannot do.
  1. Carbon Dioxide Fire Extinguisher
  • A carbon dioxide fire extinguisher (CO2) is one of the cleanest types of extinguishers to use as it leaves no residue and requires no cleanup.
  • The CO2 extinguisher does exactly that – extinguishes CO2. By doing so, it removes oxygen from the fire, effectively suffocating it of oxygen. It is perfect for use on class B fires that involve flammable liquids and on electrical fires.
  1. Wet Chemical Fire Extinguisher
  • The wet chemical extinguisher is a specialized type primarily focused on class K fires, those involving cooking media such as animal and vegetable fats or oils.
  • These extinguishers contain a solution composed of potassium that effectively launches a two-pronged assault on fires.
  • First, the liquid mist it sprays acts to cool the fire. Second, due to the chemical reaction of the solution with the cooking medium, a thick soap-like substance forms, sealing the surface of the liquid to prevent re-ignition.
  • The wet chemical extinguisher, then, is ideal for a kitchen setting and class K fires. However, it can also be effective for class A fires where a material such as wood or paper has caught fire.
  1. Water Mist Fire Extinguisher
  • The most versatile of the set, the water mist extinguisher, uses a newer technology that works across most classes of fire.
  • This type of extinguisher releases microscopic water molecules that fight the fire on a variety of levels. First, because so much water is dispersed in such a microscopic fog-like form, the level of oxygen in the air is decreased, which helps to suffocate the fire.
  • Second, the water particles are drawn to the fire and, as water always does, acts to cool it, reducing the temperature.
  • Finally, and perhaps what is most unique about the water mist extinguishers, is that the water has been de-ionized (the minerals have been removed). As a result, it can actually be used on electrical fires, as the de-ionized water will not act as a conductor, as well as on burning liquids/gases that a standard water extinguisher could not be applied to.
  • Thus, a water mist extinguisher is safe and effective for use on classes A, B, C and K fires.
  1. Foam Fire Extinguisher
  • Foam fire extinguishers are suitable for class A and the flammable liquids of class B, though not effective for gaseous fires.
  • They spray a type of foam that expands when it hits the air and blankets the fire. This blanket prevents the vapors from rising off the liquid to feed the fire, thus starving it of fuel. Also, because the foam is mixed with water, it has a cooling effect as well.
  • Foam extinguishers are some of the best for liquid fires, such as gasoline fires, but can also be used on Class A fires involving solid combustibles like wood.
  1. Clean Agent Fire Extinguisher
  • A clean agent fire extinguisher is a type of gaseous fire suppression. Stored in its liquid form, when it is sprayed and hits the air, it converts to its gas form which is non-conductive, safe for use while humans are present, leaves no residue, and has a very short atmospheric lifetime, making it eco-friendly.
  • The gas, often composed of Halon, extinguishes fire by reducing the oxygen levels and impeding the chain reaction. Because it is non-conductive and so clean, it is ideal for rooms or businesses filled with electrical and computer equipment. They are most commonly used for class B and C fires.

Now that you are familiar with the types of fires and their respective extinguishers, take a look into the sorts of activities and projects you do on your property and get the fire extinguisher, or extinguishers needed to protect yourself and others in case of an emergency. Like any other tool, this won’t help much if you don’t know how to properly use it. Take the time to train everyone in the building, and make sure the equipment is maintained properly as well.

How SERVPRO Helps; Water Damage

12/20/2021 (Permalink)

Central Louisiana friends, SERVPRO of Alexandria is an emergency service company that specializes in water damage. The reason that water damage is considered an emergency service is because water losses, if left unattended, can result in potentially hazardous situations. Check out this blog for more information on that. So how exactly can SERVPRO of Alexandria aid you in your time of need? We follow three main steps when we deal with water damaged property.

Extraction

The first action we take is to remove all the standing water, if there is any, by vacuuming it out. If the need to remove furniture is required to have better access, then that would also happen during this first step.

Demolition

When flooring, walls, or anything unmovable is far too damaged to repair, we go through the demolition process. To avoid water from affecting the structure any further in the future, demolition and reconstruction is usually the best bet. We do our best to make this as clean as possible to make it easier for a contractor to work. Baseboards may be removed to help materials such as drywall with better airflow which ultimately also helps dry in a faster manner.

Monitoring

The third step is to monitor the drying progress daily. Our team will use state of the art equipment to dry the damaged property and measure humidity levels to make sure everything is progressing adequately. There are stubborn materials such as hardwood flooring that may require special equipment to dry properly.

Don't let it be too late! As soon as the main source of water has been stopped, don't hesitate to call SERVPRO of Alexandria at (318) 427-7511. We can satisfy all of your drying needs! Stay dry Cenla!

Natural Fire Extinguisher

12/16/2021 (Permalink)

Baking soda in a dish Baking soda can be used as a natural fire extinguisher

Did you know that baking soda is a natural extinguisher?

Isn't it interesting how baking soda has multiple uses, such as cleaning, baking, and smothering fire? It definitely has some versatility. Sodium bicarbonate can be used to put out small and controllable house fires; small grease and electrical fires. You can look at this other blog to find out how to put out small fires around your house.

Did you ever consider salt to be a natural extinguisher as well?

A lot of people do not realize that salt is one of the main ingredients in a conventional fire extinguisher. Salt disperses heat and minimizes oxygen supply to a fire. Salt is better used on a grease fire on or around an oven.

It goes without saying that fire is dangerous and can quickly get out of control. Having  conventional fire extinguishers available is the best option. However, it is always good to be informed of other alternatives if needed under an emergency. Stay fire safe Cenla!

Water Heater Maintenance

12/14/2021 (Permalink)

Technician checking a water heater Tech checking water heater

This season, in our community, water damage has been caused most commonly by water heaters. Did you know that water heaters are a plumbing fixture that may need regular maintenance? Meaning, not only can you extend the life of the heater, but also help prevent it from causing damage in your house. Here are some steps on how to take care of your water heater. If you don’t feel comfortable doing this yourself, you can always call a professional. Visit Alexandria’s Chamber of Commerce  or the National Home Builders Association of Central Louisiana website to find a local plumber.

  1. Test the TPR valve
  • Shut off the power and the cold-water supply valve.
  • Place a bucket under the pipe connected to the temperature-pressure-release (TPR) valve on the top or side of the tank. (This valve opens if the tank pressure gets too high.)
  • Lift the valve's tab to let some water out, then let go. If water keeps flowing, drain the tank partway, unscrew the old valve with a pipe wrench, and install a new one.
  1. Check the Anode rod
  • Put a hose to the tank's drain cock and let out a few gallons of water.
  • Now fit a 1 1/16-inch socket onto the rod's hex head on top of the heater (or under its top plate) and unscrew the rod. If it's less than ½ inch thick or coated with calcium, buy a new one, wrap its threads with Teflon tape, put it back in the tank, and tighten securely. Use this segmented rod if headroom above the tank is limited.
  1. Drain the tank and wash out sediment
  • Drain the remaining water in the tank into the bucket, then stir up the sediment on the tank's bottom by briefly opening the cold-water supply valve. Drain and repeat until clean water comes out of the hose.
  • Close the drain cock, refill the tank, and turn its power back on.
  1. Adjust the temperature
  • Find the temperature dial on the side of the tank and unscrew its cover. Adjust the dial to 120 degrees using a flathead screwdriver. For every 10 degrees the temperature is lowered, you can expect to save up to 5 percent in energy costs.
  • Turn the water heater off or the thermostat down to its lowest setting if you plan to be away from home for more than three days.
  1. Insulate the pipes
  • Buy some self-sticking 3/8-inch-thick foam pipe insulation that matches the pipes' diameter.
  • Slide the foam over the hot-and cold-water pipes as far as you can reach. Insulating the cold-water pipe prevents condensation in summer.
  • Peel the tape and squeeze the insulation closed. If the pipe is 6 inches or less from the flue, cover it with 1-inch-thick unfaced fiberglass pipe wrap.
  1. Insulate the heater
  • Cut the insulating blanket (shown: R-4.5 foil-covered bubble wrap) to fit around pipes, the TPR valve, and the temperature control sticking out of the tank.
  • Wrap the side of the tank, and seal cuts with foil tape. Do not cover the tops of oil or gas heaters.
  • Cap an electric heater with an oversize circle of insulation, and tape its edge securely to the side of the tank.

There are benefits to caring for your water heater. These are just some ways you can increase a water heater’s operating efficiency and longevity. Adding insulation and setting the temperature have to be only done once. Flushing the tank and checking the anode rod should be done once a year. Insulation reduces heat loss by 45% and lowers as much as 9% of costs. A viable anode rod in the tank will help prevent the inside from rusting.

Feel free to reach out to SERVPRO of Alexandria for questions or concerns regarding water related issues in your home or business.

Spotting Mold

12/9/2021 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Alexandria is a 24/7 emergency service company that can handle any size disaster. Water damage restoration is a service that we specialize in. Sometimes water damage grows into mold damage. How, you may ask? Well, mold starts to grow when wet building materials stay moist for too long. Mold can grow into walls, upholstery, carpeting, and can also cause damage to the floors and ceilings of a building. As clean and dry as something might look, if not mitigated properly, the risk of mold growth can occur.

If you live in a moisture-prone home, it’s important to keep an eye out for signs of suspicious growth. Not only can you see it but you will sometimes be able to smell it too. Monitoring your family for any changes in health is another sign.

Mold signs include:

  • Musty odor or mildew smell
  • Visible signs of growth on surfaces
  • Discovering water leaks or water stains
  • Health effects

Because there are similarities in symptoms to other common illnesses, many people don't think that mold is the cause. Therefore, it is important for all property owners to perform regular inspections around their building and keep an eye out for signs of mold.

Suspicious growth often occurs in places where leaks go unnoticed making water damage the most likely cause. SERVPRO of Alexandria has the training, technique, and tools to locate, remove, and dispose of mold. Call us at any time, any day at (318) 427 7511. Mold Prevention Tips

12/7/2021 (Permalink)

Maintain healthy air quality by minimizing mold damage to your property. Here are some tips on how to help lessen mold damage.

Inspect buildings for evidence of water damage and visible mold as part of routine building maintenance,

Correct conditions causing mold growth (e.g., water leaks, condensation, infiltration, or flooding) to prevent mold growth.

Inside your home you can control mold growth by:

  • Controlling humidity levels;
    • Keep humidity levels as low as you can—between 30% and 50%–all day long. An air conditioner or dehumidifier will help you keep the level low. Bear in mind that humidity levels change over the course of a day with changes in the moisture in the air and the air temperature, so you will need to check the humidity levels more than once a day.
  • Promptly fixing leaky roofs, windows, and pipes;
    • Fix any leaks in your home’s roof, walls, or plumbing so mold does not have moisture to grow.
  • Thoroughly cleaning and drying after flooding;
  • Ventilating shower, laundry, and cooking areas.
    • Be sure your home has enough ventilation. Use exhaust fans which vent outside your home in the kitchen and bathroom. Make sure your clothes dryer vents outside your home.
  • Use an air conditioner or a dehumidifier during humid months.
  • Consider not using carpet in rooms or areas like bathrooms, or basements that may have a lot of moisture.

SERVPRO of Alexandria is here to help. Anyday, anytime, please call us at (318) 427 7511 for any type of disaster recovery.

Holiday Decorations Safety

12/6/2021 (Permalink)

Holiday Light Decorations Colorful holiday light decorations hanging from the roof of a house.

It’s December Cenla! Even though many of you have started to decorate for Christmas months ago, SERVPRO of Alexandria is here to help you stay safe this time of the year.

Let’s begin with the most common decoration of the season: the tree. Whether you like natural trees or fake trees, there are things to consider when you first purchase them.

There is a concern that plastic trees are too flammable but you need not worry! There are trees that are now fire resistant. When you’re at your local store, make sure you look for the fire resistant label on the box. This makes the tree less susceptible to catching fire and let’s you have better peace of mind.

In the case of natural trees make sure to choose one that isn’t too dry. Having a dry tree is a safety hazard as they will ignite much faster. By observing the needles you should be able to tell if a tree is hydrated. The following tips should help:

  • They are green. The greener the better.
  • They are hard to pull off.
  • When you bend them between your fingers, they don’t snap.
  • When you shake the tree, there isn’t a shower of needles falling off.

You can also tell by the trunk. If it is sticky with resin, then it's definitely hydrated.

When placing the tree, make sure any heating source is at least 3 feet away from it. Also don’t block exits. It is recommended to water your tree at least every two days. But the more frequent, the better. Keeping it hydrated will keep it looking healthy and less likely to ignite.

Use proper outlets

When plugging in your light-up decorations, take into consideration the following:

  • The power source should be plugged into the ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) outlet.
    • This will shut the circuit down if there is an over current. You may opt to install one, in which case a handyman can help you with that, or buy a portable outdoor unit.
  • Do not overload the extension cords, at the maximum there should be 3 light strings according to the recommendations from the (CPSC). They also encourage homeowners to unplug decorations when there is no one in the building, and turn them off before going to sleep.

Read the labels!

Lights and other wired decorations have wattage levels which you need to make sure you are conforming to.

Don't use any damaged electric lights. Cracked sockets, frayed or bare wires, and loose connections may pose a fire or  shock hazard.

Keep your fireplace and chimney clean.

Don't throw any wrapping paper into the fireplace. A flash fire may result due to wrappings igniting and burning intensibly.

Candles can set the mood for a lovely holiday evening. Open flame is a fire hazard, so perhaps consider using battery-operated candles. In any case, follow these recommendations if you decide to light up regular candles:

  • Keep them on a sturdy base that won’t tip over.
  • Do not leave a candle unattended.
  • Do not have any lighted candles, lighters, or matches close or on the tree or evergreens.
  • Consider a non-flammable candle holder.
  • Keep candles away from other decorations and wrapping paper.
  • Place them somewhere they will not get knocked or blown over.

Interesting stats about the holiday season

-130,000 fires are reported in December alone. Causing 400 fatalities and 1,600 injuries.

-The entire month of December as well as New Years have on average over 200 fire related fatalities and injuries.

-Almost a fourth of Christmas tree fires are due to the trees being too close to a heat source.

-Holiday decorations and Christmas trees account for almost 2,000 fires. This case caused 41 million in property damage according to the NFPA.

-The majority of homeowners have smoke detectors in their homes. Although 24% of those have not changed their batteries in the last 2 years. The Fire Department of the City of Alexandria can help with more information regarding smoke detectors and more.

-More than 20% of Americans do not turn off their decoration lights before going to sleep, or leaving their houses.

As a final tip, we encourage our community to keep an escape plan in mind. Make sure to practice it with your family. It will help to know exactly what to do when there is an emergency.

Stay safe Central Louisiana and Happy Holidays!

Heating Up Your Home

12/6/2021 (Permalink)

Space heater with a text that says "Safety precautions when using space heaters Space Heater

Did You Know...

Heaters are the second leading cause of home fires as well as home fire injuries? It is also the third leading cause of home fire deaths. Because we care, we share; here are some ways you can attempt to stay out of those statistics.

Three Feet Rule

-Keep your heater 3 feet from anything that could catch fire. The potential for house fires increases when you leave them on for too long or too close to flammable items. Space heaters and electric blankets may cause a spark and ignite.

-Turn off portable heaters when you’re not in the room. Night can be cold, but it's safest to not sleep with them on.

-Keep heaters plugged into the wall, not extension cords. Keep them flat on the ground and away from kids and pets.

Do not use a stove oven to heat up your house.

This is one of those “just because you can, doesn't mean you should” situations.

Using an oven to heat a house is not only inefficient, it is also risky and potentially deadly.

Carbon monoxide (CO) can cause health effects. CO is an invisible, odorless gas that is emitted when gas appliances are used.

Check out our blog on how to put out some common, small house fires and you can visit our local Fire Department’s site for some more fire prevention tips.

How to Safely Put Out Small House Fires

12/2/2021 (Permalink)

Grease fire on top of stove. A pan with grease on fire on top of a stove.

At SERVPRO of Alexandria, we care about our community’s safety. As common as fires could be, we still hope our loved ones don’t ever have to go through an incident such as a house fire.

Let’s talk about small, manageable fires; situations where we can control and keep the fire from spreading. It might be small, but it is important to keep your distance and treat fires with confidence and caution. Here are some tips on how to put some of those flames out.

-When an electrical fire starts, cautiously disconnect the electricity to the source of the fire.

-Never use water to put it out.

-There are 3 things we recommend you can do to put out the fire

  • Baking Soda. Did you know baking soda is a natural extinguishing agent?
  • Fire extinguisher. Preferably multipurpose fire extinguisher with “C” on the label.
  • Heavy Blanket. Smother it; no oxygen, no flames.

-Natural gas fires are those types of fires you don't want to extinguish on your own.

  • If possible, turn the valve off.
  • Exit the building, call the fire department, and the utility company as soon as you are safely outside.

-In case your oven ignites, leave the oven door closed. Remember, no oxygen, no flames. If the fire continues or is too large to contain, follow the previous recommendations.

Attempted to fry some chicken nuggets and now your pot is on fire?

  • Carefully cover the flames with a metal lid or perhaps a cookie sheet. Anything metal that could cover the pot should work.
  • Turn off the burner/heat source.
  • Remember baking soda? Well, it applies here too. In any case, salt is a good option as well. Both white powders are non-flammable and will smother the flames and extinguish them. Do not attempt to smother it with sugar not flour, contrary to baking soda and salt, these will catch fire.
  • As last resort; a class B dry chemical fire extinguisher. Make sure to use it cautiously, the pressure can cause the oil to spread, creating a bigger fire.
  • Do not use water.

Or perhaps you’re out in the backyard cooking on your gas grill and a grease fire starts.

  • Everything from the nuggets incident applies here.
  • An upside down pot could also work to cover and smother the fire.
  • Pressured fire extinguishers should definitely be a last resort. Do not stand too close, and spray with caution until the fire is out.
  • Clean the grill with a wire brush to remove any flammable residue, as well as baking soda if it was used.
  • Do not use water.

The City of Alexandria’s Fire Department has some more general safety tips you can follow.

Lesson of the day, keep baking soda, salt, metal sheet or lid, and a fire extinguisher in your kitchen in case of an emergency. Stay safe Central Louisiana!

Pipe Bursting Prevention Tips

11/24/2021 (Permalink)

water damaged pipes Water damaged pipes flooding property

So now that the holiday season has started, cold weather is already showing up and you know what else is here? At SERVPRO of Alexandria, we like to call this time of year, the pipe bursting season. Our team is out in the community dealing with some already! So don’t think that this exempts you. No one plans for an incident like this one, so the best we can do is advise you on how to try and prevent your pipes from bursting.

Why do pipes burst during the winter?

When talking about water damage from bursting pipes  let’s start with the root of the cause. Pipes tend to burst when one of two things happen. During the winter time, either the pipe itself contracts and ruptures on the weaker areas, or the water inside the pipe freezes, which makes the pipe expand and burst on those same areas. Now, there are some extreme cases where even heat may cause damage, but it is most common during the cold season of the year.

Keep an eye out for under 32 degree weather conditions, which is water’s freezing point.

Keeping water running through a faucet will help avoid water from freezing. A small amount of water will make the difference. Still water will be affected by the cold leading it to freeze, expand and eventually cause a burst.

Given that regular maintenance to your pipes will help prevent water damage, we recommend having a good relationship with a plumber. Contact the National Home Builders Association of Central Louisiana for help finding a plumber.

To help prevent pipe bursts make sure to direct warm air to cold areas of your home. This will help your pipes last longer and avoid ruptures. Focus on areas that have pipes close to the outside, such as walls and windows.

Seal any air leaks you might have that might bring in air into your home. Common places for these are around electrical wiring, dryer vents, and pipes. In extreme cases, any cold let in will cause the pipes to freeze.

At the end of the day, there is only so much you can do to attempt to prevent the worst situation. If pipes do burst at your home, SERVPRO of Alexandria is here to help! We are a 24/7 emergency service company, and water losses like this must be dealt with right away. Don’t hesitate and call SERVPRO of Alexandria.

Stay warm out there!

Thanksgiving Dinner Safety Tips

11/23/2021 (Permalink)

As the holiday season approaches, we encourage you to take the best precautions possible. Kitchen fires are not uncommon during this time of year and safety should be a priority. Starting with thanksgiving dinner, here are some do’s and don’t tips you can follow:

Thinking of going the extra mile and deep frying your turkey this year?

  • Safety first! Wear goggles and mitts to avoid any burn injuries and protect you from splashing oil.
  • Keep the fryer a minimum of 10ft away from your home, kids, pets, garages, trees, or any other structure.
  • If using a propane powered fryer, keep the tank and burner 2ft apart from each other.
  • Keep the fryer on a flat surface on the ground.
  • Make sure the oil is leveled and steady at all times. This ensures safety for everyone.
  • Turkey must be completely thawed and dried out before lowering to oil. Water and ice may cause flare-ups if it makes contact with hot oil.
  • Never leave the fryer unattended.
  • A turkey of 8-10lbs is perfect, try to keep away from 12lbs.
  • When you lower the turkey into the fryer, turn off the burner before, and turn it back on after.
  • If the oil starts to smoke, turn off the fryer. Oil will catch on fire once it passes its smoke point.

In case of small, controllable fire:

  • Be extremely careful with grease fires. It is easy to accidentally spread them and cause a bigger fire.
  • Turn off burner
  • Take a metal lid to cover the fire.
  • Baking soda can also be used to smother the fire.
  • Only as a last resort use a fire extinguisher. The pressure may cause the grease and fire to spread so stand far away and spray with caution until the fire is out.

After successfully frying and safely removing the turkey, here are some tips on how to properly dispose of the oil.

Planning on cooking your turkey the old fashioned way?

  • There are still a few safety tips to follow!
  • Keep your stove and oven clean
  • Stay in the kitchen area. Avoid going into different rooms to deal with guests.
  • Check on your oven frequently to make sure it is cooking properly
  • Keep children away from the kitchen, you don’t want them to accidentally get hurt with hot pots and pans.

In case your oven catches fire

  • Turn oven off
  • Keep the oven door closed
  • Keep a flame-resistant oven mitt, potholder or lid nearby to smother any flames

For more safety guidelines, visit Louisiana Department of Public Safety and Corrections website.

As stubborn and sensitive smoke alarms are, do not remove them! Ultimately they have a purpose and save lives. Make sure they are always functional and in good condition.

A good safety tip is to have an escape plan for you, your family, and guests just in case something does happen.

Stay safe and enjoy your cooking!

Preventing extensive water damage during a storm

10/9/2020 (Permalink)

Water mitigation flyer Water Mitigation

Clean your downspouts and gutters

Make sure to clean out your gutters at least once every six months or more often if you have a lot of trees near your home. If this is not maintained it can cause water to collect in the gutters, which can cause damage to your roof and gutters.  Checking to make sure your down spouts are cleaned ensures that during a storm the water can run away from your house properly. If your down spouts are clogged, the water has nowhere to run freely and can cause damage to your foundation. At SERVPRO of Alexandria we want to ensure that water is flowing properly from gutters through the down spouts to keep you from having further damage.

Switch off the mains

If you are leaving your home for a storm and plan to be away for a while, turn the water off at the main line. This will stop any dripping or other water issues while you are away. The worst feeling is coming home to a flooded house due to a pipe bursting while you are away. As the rain falls during a storm, the ground typically becomes mush and the additional weight and pressure of the water could cause ruptures or leaks.

Flood damages to your home can range from minor to severe and dealing with the issue can be overwhelming. While some water issues cannot be foreseen, there are a few things you can do to prevent flood damages to your home from factors you have some control over. If you experience flooding in your home, Please call SERVPRO of Alexandria 318-427-7511 so we can assist you with the aftermath of a storm that caused water damage to your home.

Flood Cleanup

3/9/2020 (Permalink)

Flood damage does not always present itself immediately. Damages can surface after a storm due to the quality of the flood water and the impacted property.

A fire in your home is preventable when the risk is lessened with enough precautions. Other similar types of damage can be controlled to an extent with the homeowner’s help. No matter what effort you put forth, flooding is uncooperative after taking place.

Slower moving floods create fewer risks to those outside at the time of the flood. For instance, flash floods are catastrophically powerful enough to sweep cars away. Both types of floods can create bio-hazard risks in a home. If a home has been flooded, it must be cleaned to a sanitary state before anyone lives there again.

SERVPRO cleaning and restoration services targets biological presences, microbial organisms, chemical compounds as well as structural damages. 100% of flood damages typically do not present immediately which includes electrical wiring in addition to waterlogged outlets. Chemical compounds such as various salts, fertilizers, sewage, motor fluids (such as gasoline, oil, brake fluid), and run-off from local factories can cause additional damages to a flooded property.

Gutting a home should take priority while restoring a residence to suitable living conditions. Furnishings can be cleaned to acceptable levels unless they have been submerged for an extended time period. This is detrimental when handling compressed wood products. Solid wood furniture is not as easily damaged; however, it is more likely to crack in places where two pieces of wood were fastened together. Fabric that covers upholstery can harbor pathogens such as mold and bacteria. Precautionary care must be completed when cleaning these items. If needed, special brushes may need to be used in order to preserve raised patterns while still cleaning the furniture piece adequately.

What To Know About Content Cleaning After a Fire

After a fire in your Alexandria, LA., the cleaning of your personal items may be something you’re worried about. Here’s what you may want to know.

1. Many Items Can Be Salvaged

One of the most comforting things to know is that many more items than you might initially believe can be salvaged. This includes paper documentation and electronics. If you need help identifying what items can be recovered, you may wish to consult with a restoration professional. Items can be cleaned and then moved to content storage until repairs can be completed.

Some solutions include dry-cleaning for delicate fabrics, washing detergents for items that can be submerged, and wipe on solutions for large scale metal or wood items. An ozone machine can be used to restore air quality, while paper documents and electronics may require special care.

Remember, different cleaning options, such as dry-cleaning, may be needed for different items.

How dry does your home need to be after a water loss?

10/14/2019 (Permalink)

woman measuring moisture levels Following the industry standards to dry your home after it suffers water damage is critical to avoiding secondary types of damage like mold.

This is a great question that we get all the time. In fact there could be multiple answers depending on the methods used for gathering information.

At SERVPRO of Alexandria we take moisture readings immediately upon arriving at the job site. This gives us critical information that we need to monitor the levels as we move forward. In addition to the moisture readings we also take readings from an area that was not affected. This is our drying goal. Let's say that you have a two story home and only the bottom floor had water damage. A good place to take a dry reading would be upstairs since it had no water damage.

That drying goal is what we would use each day to compare the wet materials to.

If you have any questions please give us a call.

Communication: The Key to Success

Water Damage: Secondary problems

10/10/2019 (Permalink)

mold growth on walls Secondary damage, like mold growth, can occur if your water damaged home is not dried out correctly.

If you experience water damage from a busted pipe or AC leak then you most likely focused on the obvious problem, the water. What many home owners miss is the secondary damage that occurs, like mold or weakened structural materials.

If you fail to get the structure dry fast enough you may begin to notice discoloration from high moisture levels. This discoloration, many times, is mold growth. Mold growth can get out of control and potentially put you in a tough situation with your insurance company. Also, some of the building materials, like studs and base plates, can begin to rot in addition to developing mold growth.

SERVPRO of Alexandria understands this and will begin drying your home or business immediately in order to counteract these issues.

Determining if your house or business is in a floodplain should be a priority, especially in Louisiana. Just knowing this can mean the difference in what steps you take to prepare for a storm event and how much it may cost.

With this knowledge you can begin the process of setting up flood insurance. The cost may vary from region to region but is well worth should a rising water storm event occur.

If you have experinced water damage as a result of rising water flooding please do not hesitate to call SERVPRO of Alexandria.

Is Smoke Damage Covered By Insurance?

5/9/2019 (Permalink)

Fire damage and smoke damage can cause long term issues if not handled correctly.

Is smoke damage a covered loss? Read on to learn everything you need to know about smoke claims to put your mind at ease.

Soot Damage and Insurance

In most cases, damage from smoke will be covered by your commercial insurance policy. This is even the case if the fire occurred at a company right next to yours. However, there are some steps you need to take to properly file your claim and increase the chances of it being accepted. They are as follows:

  1. Contact your insurance company to report the smoke damage and file a claim.
  2. Assess your loss and prepare a smoke cleanup plan with the help of professionals.
  3. Record proof of any damage and repairs through photographs, receipts and other documents.
  4. Prepare for the insurance adjuster to arrive for surveying purposes.

Following the steps above will increase the chances of restoring your property as best as you can. Having a solid plan in place will also make it more likely that your insurance company will approve your claim.

Smoke Cleaning Assistance

As you can see above, creating an action plan for cleanup is one of the most important parts of this entire claims and restoration process. A reliable , fire damage restoration company should be able to arrive on an emergency basis, assess the situation and help you build a cleanup plan that will likely include reducing odors and eliminating smoke from your building.

Water Damage: Always Be Prepared

5/2/2019 (Permalink)

Water damage will continue to create problems unless it is dried out immediately.

When we think of water damage to our business or home, many owners think of water damage happening from mother nature. Rain and flooding to which they have little control. So why worry about what they can't control right? The fact is that they are more likely to have water damage from things they can try to control or at least prevent.

For example; the roof is one of the most common places to cause water damage. Owners should make sure the roof is checked regularly. One inch of rain weighs about 5 pounds. This can cause a lot of strain on a roof and can lead to leaking.

Pipes and drains seem like they would be checked but most aren't checked regularly. A crack as small as an eight of an inch can dump 250 gallons of water per day.

Sprinklers are great if you have a fire but not so great if it malfunctions. Sprinklers should be checked for updates but also signs of rust or damage.

Appliances should be checked regularly ; water heaters, air conditioners, etc. can cause a lot of water damage if things break on them.

We can't stop all water damage but we can try to do as  much preventative care as we can. SERVPRO of Alexandria is here to help when the unexpected happens. Just give us a call 318-427-7511. We are there for your business 24/7.

Water damage from a burst pipe in a Natchitoches home.

The Benefits Of Prompt Water Removal In Alexandria, Pineville, Ball, Natchitoches, Marksville and Winnfield

When your home in Central Louisiana sustains an overflowing sink or tub, broken pipe, or other lost water, getting the water out as quickly as possible from your living space comes with added benefits. We’re Faster to Any Size Disaster, making it possible for our teams to make the situation less troublesome for you.

We work with homeowners in the Alexandria area after lost water incidents cause problems by using water removal methods that help make things normal again fast. We want to make your residence like it was before, “Like it never even happened.” Because the process of extracting water while it is in its liquid form before it can escape into the air and additional objects inside your home than it is to pull moisture from the air, we start as soon as we possibly can.

The benefits go beyond a lower restoration cost, also. Not only does it cost less to extract more and dry less, but it also requires less time to accomplish this and start with cleanup. Because water that has less time to evaporate into the air and condense elsewhere, we do not need to use equipment to track it to other locations in your home.

We also can use less equipment, meaning the cost falls even more. Instead of four heaters, six air movers, and three desiccant machines, we can use about half of that number.

Other stories of your home might not become affected at all, meaning less traffic in these areas by our specialists, and increased privacy for your family members. Fewer or no machines in these areas also result in less noise that can disrupt children's schoolwork and interfere with anyone who sleeps during the daytime hours.

Fast action to a lost water event means that microbes have less time to become a problem for you. When mold's access to water is only temporary, the few spores that become active initially quickly die off from lack of continued moisture.

If your home in Alexandria, Pineville, Ball, Natchitoches, Marksville or Winnfield sustains a terrible incident involving lost water and you need water removal services, SERVPRO of Alexandria is the company you can trust to do the job right.

For Central Louisiana Properties, SERVPRO Technicians Evaluate and Execute Cleanup and Restoration after Storm Flooding

A Welcome Sight to Alexandria, Pineville, Ball, Natchitoches, Marksville and Winnfield Homeowners Following Flood Damage

Ways to Speed Up Flood Damage Removal in Alexandria and surrounding Central Louisiana areas

Floods ruin property in a matter of hours or even minutes depending on the intensity of the raging water and the level of contamination among other things. However, the removal of such water and debris left after the incident is rarely fast. Working with a professional restoration service helps speed up task because of the different specialists like ASD, Applied Structural Drying and WRT, Water Restoration Technicians that make up the team working on your home.

Proper assessment at the early stages of flood removal in Alexandria can help reduce the overall time taken by shifting the focus to crucial steps. Flooding can happen from rising groundwater or other sources such as driving rain or a punctured roof that lets water into the structure. While rising groundwater is mostly black water with high levels of contamination, the other cases may represent a lower amount of contaminants, so the principles applied for removal are different. Our SERVPRO technicians evaluate the type of flooding to determine whether it is just a case of removing the water or also tearing out porous materials like drywall to eliminate contaminants and excess moisture.

Floodwaters reach different sections of the property including concealed ones such as wall cavities. The techniques applied for removal can quicken or lengthen the time it takes. Since the water also soils the affected areas, the method of removing the water should also incorporate cleaning to speed up the exercise. Our SERVPRO crews rely on techniques such as performing flood cuts, weep holes and vent holes. The flood cut opens up a section of the wall, typically two feet high, and about six inches above the floodwater line. This non-salvageable material is discarded, and the exposed cavity can be dried and disinfected.

The time it takes before the removal process starts can lengthen the process because secondary damages happen if water remains in the structure over extended periods. These additional damages might include mold formation and loss of structural integrity in materials such as wood. Our SERVPRO technicians respond fast since we have fully stocked green vehicles and trailers ready to assist clients during floods.

Hurricane Michael 2018

SERVPRO of Alexandria makes it a priority to support our fellow citizens when disaster strikes. In the fall of 2018 we sent two crews to Panama City, Florida to support the local SERVPROs. What we found was a community in crisis.

We rolled up our sleeves and got work. We were tasked with bring a few credit unions back online. With most banks being closed and everything operating on a cash basis it was imperative that we establish a portable ATM. We brought in generators to each branch so that the restoration process could proceed according to plan.

All in all, the community pulled together with SERVPRO and we got people back in their homes and back to work faster.

This experience served to remind us that helping people is the core of why we do what we do.

SERVPRO of Alexandria Offers Biohazard Cleanup & Remediation Services

Always Choose a Trained Professional

  • Because it’s traumatic: No one should have to deal with the personal impact of cleaning up after the traumatic loss of a loved one. SERVPRO of Alexandria can get a situation cleaned up quickly, compassionately and discreetly.
  • Because it’s safer: Federal regulations classify all human and animal remains, including blood, urine, feces, vomit and bodily fluids, as biohazards. The safe cleanup and removal of biohazardous materials involves extensive analysis and detailed work, and the use of state-of-the-art cleaning and odor removal technologies.

Licensed Bonded & Insured

January is just getting started and if you live in the Alexandria, Louisiana area you have already had and severe thunderstorms and almost freezing temperatures.

  • Water sprinkler lines, pipes that are exposed to severe cold, like outdoor hose bibs and swimming pool supply lines
  • Water supply pipes in unheated interior areas like basements, crawl spaces, attics, garages, or kitchen cabinets.
  • Pipes that run against exterior walls that have little or no insulation.

A Few Leading Fire Sources

1/3/2019 (Permalink)

Outdoor grills can be a cause of fire in your Alexandria, LA. home

Leading Causes Of Fire Damage

Homeowners in Central Louisiana, should be aware of a number of leading causes of fire damage. Understanding these statistics can help you prevent a home fire and make more informed decisions regarding your fire insurance policy.

1. Food Preparation

Cooking fires are the largest category of fires requiring a documented fire department response. Most of these involve a stove range of some kind, with electrical ranges being somewhat more dangerous than gas ranges on average. Outdoor grills also rank fairly high on the list of fire causes. Around a third of these cooking fires are the result of unattended flames or heating surfaces. Clothing ignition does not usually directly cause kitchen fires, but a fire that spreads to clothing has a strong correlation with personal injury.

2. Heating Systems

The second-most common category of home fire, at around 15% of total reported cases, involves heating elements. Many of these fires, around two-fifths, are due to smaller portable space heater units. The typical cause of a space heater fire is the proximity to combustibles such as upholstery or certain building materials. Another prominent issue is the lack of appropriate fire cleaning around fireplaces and chimneys, where certain flammable materials can build up over time.

3. Electrical Systems

Another leading cause of fire lies in the various faults that can appear in home wiring and related electrical systems. A majority of these occur either in lighting components or locations where electrical power is transferred, such as outlets or adapters. Homeowners should take special care to schedule an inspection for any exposed wiring or non-functional appliances, as these can lead to shorts that ignite surrounding flammable materials.

Even the most cautious homeowner can never completely eliminate the risk of a home fire. However, a little familiarity with some of the most common fire problems can help prevent injury and the need for professional fire restoration.

Four Ways to Clean Belongings After a Fire

12/17/2018 (Permalink)

Stuffed animal before and after.

Watching your Alexandria, Pineville or Ball home burn can leave you with an ache in your heart. Not only do you have to deal with a massive insurance claim, but there's a good chance you'll end up losing some of your treasured possessions. When you work with a residential fire damage cleanup crew, some of your smoke-damaged belongings may get saved. Content cleaning is a delicate art that can take the following shapes.

1. Dry-Cleaning: Clothes, furniture and other porous items often have to be cleaned with a dry-cleaning method. This helps remove the smoke and soot that built up during the fire. If you try to wash your clothes on a normal cycle, you may end up causing more damage. The soot has to be removed from the textiles before you can return to a typical cleaning method.

2. Wet cleaning is an effective cleaning method for removing moderate to heavy residues. For items that can’t withstand wet cleaning we can spray and wipe.

3. Foam cleaning can be used for upholstery fabrics that might shrink or bleed if wet cleaned.

4. Abrasive cleaning involves agitation of the surface being cleaned.

5. Odor Removal: Smoke isn't the only thing that can cling to your possessions. The odor after a fire can be a long-term reminder of what you went through. After cleaning methods have been put in place, you may want to do some sort of odor removal too. Professionals often use thermal fogging or ozone/hydroxyl treatments to rid your home of the funky smell.

After a fire, you want to get everything back to normal as soon as possible. This means you need to clean your belongings. If the cleaning process takes longer than expected, you can also use content storage to get your dirty, smelly items out of the house until they're clean.

Making a fire Escape Plan for Your Home

12/3/2018 (Permalink)

Fire escape plan

You had fire drills growing up at school, (hopefully) you have the occasional fire drill at work now that you are an adult, but do you ever have fire drills at home? Coming up with and practicing family safety drills can help to make sure your family is prepared in the event of an emergency. It is an important topic to discuss with your family, especially children.

The National Fire Protection Association has a helpful section on how to create a family fire escape plan. It includes how to draw a fire escape path for your home, how to reinforce fire safety to younger children, and tips how to stay as safe as possible during a fire.

Some of the tips include:

  • Call 911 as soon as possible, even if you think you can contain the fire
  • Know at least 2 ways out of each room
  • Have a designated outside meeting place a safe distance from the home
  • Assign “partners” for young, elderly, or family members with mobility issues
  • Close Doors behind you as you leave each room to slow the spread of smoke, heat, and fire

Your family’s safety is the first priority. After emergency services have done their job SERVPRO will be here to help you repair, restore, and recover your belongings.

How To Keep Your Restaurant Kitchen Mold-Free

11/30/2018 (Permalink)

Install a ventilation system in your Alexandria, LA. kitchen

Enjoying the fruits of your hard-earned labor through the success of your Alexandria or Pineville restaurant is always a rewarding feeling. However, coming across mold growth in your commercial kitchen can bring that contentment to a halt very quickly. Thankfully, there are various methods for keeping your restaurant kitchen clean and consistently mold-free.

Focus Your Attention On the Food Itself

Though there are many possible avenues for mold growth to occur, one of the most common causes of mold is through the food you bring into your kitchen. It can materialize easily on such foods as:

  • Vegetables
  • Fruits
  • Cheeses and other dairy products
  • Bread, and more

Therefore, it’s important to inspect your produce and other items before ever integrating them into your kitchen. Look for bruises, abrasions or already-apparent growths on your fruits and vegetables before purchasing. Check the expiration dates on packaged items and keep any open containers covered or sealed until use to prevent the onset of mold.

Keep a Reliable Ventilation System

Mold tends to emerge in areas that are dark, moist and generally untouched, meaning it can be hard to pinpoint the onset of mold until it’s too late. Help yourself and your kitchen crew by installing a ventilation system that reduces the high humidity in the kitchen, preventing potential mold from finding a suitable place to take root.

Remove and Restore Any Water Damage As It Occurs

Finding water damage in your restaurant would hardly be surprising, as running water is a consistent feature in any commercial kitchen with food prep spaces, dishwashing stations and more. For this reason, it’s important to always keep an eye out for continuously damp or wet areas that are the perfect breeding ground for mold. Hiring qualified mold remediation specialists to clear the area of any damage is key to a clean and healthy food prep environment.

When it comes to keeping the commercial kitchen of your Alexandria, Louisiana restaurant clean and mold-free, following these methods can help prevent any outbreak of unwanted mold growth and clear your kitchen for healthy food prep.

Why Cleaning is Critical During Fire Damage Restoration in Alexandria

8/3/2018 (Permalink)

Cleaning fire damage residues on items is not as simple as spraying and wiping down. Contact SERVPRO of Alexandria so we can help.

SERVPRO Technicians Understand Effective Techniques to Clean Residues

After a fire damage incident, it is understandable for any homeowner to be stressed. Such traumatic events disrupt your professional or personal lives, and there is need to work closely with a restoration service provider as you work towards returning your Alexandria, Pineville or Central Louisiana property to its earlier state. It all starts by identifying what is restorable and performing emergency services to limit further damage.

Cleaning is one of the services that our SERVPRO team offers when attending to fire damage events in Alexandria. One of our goals is to reduce the fire damage claims. Remember, if you do not act quickly, you might end up with expensive options such as replacing restorable items and resurfacing parts of your structure. We are going to look at some of the principles of cleaning that we use when restoring your materials.

Starting from the location where the fire originated from, our SERVPRO technicians carefully inspect the site. During the inspection, we identify the various kinds of residues, and this helps us to come up with an effective cleaning method. The cleaning process we choose should remove the smoke residues efficiently and not cause any damage to the surface.

There are four essential elements we take into consideration to suspend and remove the smoke residues: temperature, agitation, time and chemical action. Our SERVPRO technicians understand that chemical reactions increase as the temperature increases and thus we are keen to select an appropriate degree of heat that corresponds well with our cleaning solution of choice. If we want to dislodge smoke particles and distribute cleaning product on areas, we can use agitation. In this process, we can use sonic vibrations, water and air pressure, brushes and towels.

Digesting, changing pH, oxidizing, dissolving, bleaching and emulsifying are some of the chemical actions we take into consideration when cleaning your property. Depending on the action we desire, we select a proper cleaning product. Time is also critical during restoration, and it is dependent on the type of cleaning solutions we use and residues at the site.

At the first sign of mold contact SERVPRO to remediate the damage

7/13/2018 (Permalink)

SERVPRO has a varaity of tools and equipment like this air scrubber to remove mold damage from your home.

Mold is a problem in central Louisiana. The facts are that inside any home mold can grow when it has enough moisture, food, and the right temperature.

That means to stop mold damage in your Alexandria homes, SERVPRO restoration specialists have to find and remove the source of moisture. Mold spores can thrive in a range of 68 to 86 degrees, the range most homes try to maintain year-round. They also feed on nearly everything in a home, to include almost every building material except for iron, steel, and aluminum.

Most mold growths in our area begin with a simple leak. Often, there is a loose pipe connection or a rusting faucet in a wall or a laundry room that is the culprit. Even just a small amount of water can start the problem if enough spores become wet enough to expand and start to grow over the nearest surface, searching for food and more moisture to further grow the colony.

After arriving at each home, SERVPRO technicians perform a visual inspection and trace that to its source. Once they find it, our teams have two tasks: stop the leak and clean out the mold.

If the problem is a minor one, like a loose connection or hose on a washing machine, our technicians can fix that. If it is a major issue, such as an entire section of pipe rusting out, the team leader always recommends bringing in a plumber or general contractor to make the repairs.

Once they stop the source of moisture, our specialists spray the affected property with an anti-bacterial agent. It kills any active spores, and then the team members wipe down every surface or use a vacuum with a specially designed HEPA filter to capture them. If the mold had time to grow into a surface like wood paneling, the team carefully removes it for disposal. They dispose of all mold outside the home and according to Louisiana state requirements.

Removing the effects of mold in any home is not easy, but SERVPRO of Alexandria works diligently to make it as easy on a homeowner as possible. If you have or suspect this problem is in your home, call us today at (318) 427-7511 to schedule a visit and inspection. We are here for you.

Water Damage and the different Types of Water

7/6/2018 (Permalink)

When water floods your home, how do you know if it is safe to clean up on your own? This is the question thousands of homeowners ask themselves every year after waters spreads its way across the floor of the property and causes water damage. To help answer the question, the Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) has categorized contaminated water levels into three degrees of danger.

Category 1: This water is generally deemed harmless to humans and can frequently be cleaned up by the homeowner if caught before the water level gets to more than an inch or two.

Category 2: Clean water (category 1) that sits for more than 24 hours can move into category 2 because it is then considered contaminated water. Other ways this water can become contaminated include coming in contact with the following household items: Grease, Food, Bleach, Cleaning supplies. Because category two liquid is unsafe, it should be handled by a specially trained water restoration team.

Category 3: This water is classified as grossly unsafe and extreme caution should be used when encountering the liquid. This type of unclean water is often filled with fecal matter, dangerous chemicals, and toxic materials. Natural disasters, overflowing rivers, and sewage backups can flood your home with this unhealthy type of liquid.

Flood waters can be frustrating to deal with, and the uncertainty of knowing what type of water you are standing in can be frightening. With the IICRC’s list, you can feel more secure in dealing with different types of contaminated water in Alexandria, Pineville, Ball, Marksville or Natchitoches.

Air Conditioner Water Damage

6/18/2018 (Permalink)

Drip pan overflow

Air conditioning units are susceptible to leaks, and because of this water damage can occur. If you provide the following maintenance tasks periodically then you should be able to prevent water damage:

- Make sure that the drain line is not clogged. One way of clearing a clogged drain line is to use a wet-dry vacuum to suck the debris out of the pipe.

- Make sure your overflow drain pan is not damaged. If there are any rust holes then you will most likely have a leak once it gets filled with water. You may be able to patch the hole with epoxy.

- Make sure that you change your air filter every 1-2 months. If it is clogged and restricts air flow then your coils could freeze, defrost and overflow your drip pan, causing water damage.

Call SERVPRO to Restore Your Home or Business and Minimize the Damage after a Fire

6/12/2018 (Permalink)

Warehouse fire

Fires in a home or business can be dangerous and frightening at the same time. Acting quickly is key to salvaging your residential or commercial property and belongings. Getting out quickly and calling your local fire department is the best way to minimize structural damage. Also, contacting fire damage restoration specialists right away is the best way to restore the affected area. Plus, calling professionals can help save many of your belongings that were not lost in the fire.

SERVPRO technicians are experienced in fire damage cleanup in Alexandria. They arrive at your home or business ready to conduct a full inspection. Luckily, the firemen put out the fire rather quickly. Thankfully, damage to the structure and to most of the belongings is minimal. However, it is unfortunate that there is much smoke in the attic and soot on the walls, floor, and ceiling. Our technicians are trained to remove unsalvageable items such as burned-out boxes, charred furniture and clothing. Saved items are cleaned, sanitized and preserved.

We suggest that you do not wash or wipe down the walls, floor or ceiling. Leave that to our expert fire damage team. Also, try not to turn on the lights or ceiling fans because the electrical wiring may be damaged. We also suggest that if any clothing has smoke damage that you allow us to clean them for you because normal laundering or dry cleaning will not eliminate strong smoke odors. You can rely on us to thoroughly inspect the entire attic to determine the level of damage, which includes fire, smoke and soot damage. SERVPRO technicians can perform minor repairs such as boarding a missing window to protect the affected area of the home. For big carpenter jobs, we call a general contractor.

Our certified SERVPRO team is well experienced in fire damage restoration. Industrial air scrubbers, fans, and fogging equipment quickly remove offensive smoke odors. Also, industrial cleansers wash soot and dirt from the walls, floors, and ceiling. Items affected by the fire are cleaned with our powerful and effective odor removal products that neutralize and fully remove pungent and lingering smoke odors.

When possible, SERVPRO of Alexandria can restore your fire damaged home to its preloss condition. It is our goal to make you feel “Like it never even happened.” Contact us 24/7 at (318) 427-7511.

Unseen Dangers of Flood Damage in a Alexandria Home

4/25/2018 (Permalink)

Alexandria Flooding Gets Cleanup Help from SERVPRO (Natchitoches, Marksville, Pineville, Winnfield, Ball)

Stormwater Cleanup and Restoration is a Hallmark of SERVPRO Expertise

When something avoids making itself known, either because of its size or surroundings, many people tend to forget that it exists. During a flood in central Louisiana, hidden dangers such as pathogens or jagged, splintered building materials can stay underwater and out of sight but still present and able to injury people.

Alexandria homes sustaining flood damage extraction often harbor such hidden dangers. Because inexperience in such situations can cause costly and possible life-threatening mistakes, restoring your own home can place you or others in harm's way. SERVPRO employees wear personal protective equipment for both large and microscopic hazards while they carry out the restorative work your flooded home requires.

Our other specialized equipment focuses on getting your home dry, and back to a safe, clean condition again. Both help protect both your home and your family from harm. Restoring your residence to a dry state keeps microbial populations under control much more efficiently, and the elimination of any pathogens significantly reduces the risk of your family members contracting any water-borne diseases.

Removing standing water with the use of our large pump trucks happens relatively quickly, from hours to several days. Soggy floors get even more attention from our crew members when we use handheld vacuum extraction units. When we remove the majority of water from carpets and padding, we can more easily roll them up and remove these from your home.

Flooding causes substantial amounts of silt and other debris to become deposited in the fibers and padding. These foreign substances not only make it almost impossible for carpeting ever to become thoroughly dry or completely clean. Odor-causing bacteria can remain an ongoing risk and ever-present reminder of the flood, as well. More cost-effective and safer, new carpeting and padding can make your home like new again.

However, we must dry other components of your home. Walls can absorb substantial moisture during a flood. We remove saturated drywall and twelve inches above the highest watermark to ensure we remove any traces of water that traveled internally via wicking.

Other facets of restoring your home after flooding include sanitizing all surfaces. We remove your furniture so we can wipe down all the surfaces, inside drawers and all shelves, wiping the corners to ensure no debris remains behind to cause harm or let mold grow. Foodstuffs contaminated by flood waters can cause serious health problems if consumed, even when cooked. This happens many times because some bacteria can resist heat, remain viable, and then infect people. The floodwaters may have also carried inorganic matter that could be hazardous to contact to ingest.

For problems with flood damage that affect your home, call SERVPRO of Alexandria at our local number, (318) 427-7511, any day of the year, 24-hours a day. We are always ready to answer your questions and work with you in making your home safe again after this or any other disaster.

Don't Be Too Hasty With Mold Damage In Alexandria

4/24/2018 (Permalink)

An improper response to mold damage in your Alexandria home could spread the infestation further and create a much more substantial problem.

Mold Damage In Your Home

While it is true that some types of mold damage in Alexandria can cause ill health effects to residents of the affected building over time, that does not mean you should panic as soon as you find signs of growth. Panicking only creates more problems as you look to handle the problem in a hasty or unprepared fashion and could even worsen the problem if you select an incorrect approach.

What Can Go Wrong?
An improper response to mold damage in your Minneapolis home could spread the infestation further and create a much more substantial problem. Some homeowners attempt to sanitize and clean up mold themselves, thinking the problem to be more minute than it really is. However, without specialized equipment, spores may only be spread around the home on board your cleaning supplies. Even if you do manage to eliminate any visible patches of growth, there may be other problem areas around the home that can continue to spread and grow. Only through advanced detection technology such as those used by SERVPRO of Alexandria employees can the true extent of mold growth be found out.

What Do I Do?
If the colony is large, you may want to leave the house temporarily. We can help with move-outs in these circumstances. No matter the size, color, or species of mold you find, the most important thing to do is to call a qualified restoration company like SERVPRO to take care of the matter. Uncertified contractors and handymen rarely have the tools and training available to handle mold growth safely and could create the same problems that may result from you attempting to take on the problem alone. Our representatives arrive on the site within hours of your first call and can start the process of recovery with professionalism, speed, and cost-effectiveness.

SERVPRO of Alexandria provides professional mold damage remediation services on a 24/7 basis and is always available to respond to your call for help. Contact us at (318) 427-7511.

How To Identify Roof Hail Damage

4/17/2018 (Permalink)

Roof damage from hail

There is no question hail can cause a lot of damage. While some people pay closer attention to their cars or other personal items, others remember how important it is to inspect roofs for further damage. Consider how costly any kind of damage to your roof or ceiling can be. Your business deserves a thorough check by a professional service after a hailstorm.

1. Asphalt Roof Damage

With an asphalt roof, you may find the shingles look shiny after a hailstorm. This is due to hail damage. The roof damage itself will often present as random denting. You may feel the dent is too soft to the touch or you may see a loss of granules. Additionally, the felt may be exposed.

2. Wooden Roofs

Generally, the impacts of hail damage look randomized. You will not usually find a pattern, and you may see split or cracked shingles. When it comes to shingles, they are often an orange or brown color when split. There will often be impact and dent marks over the wood. While roofs can be damaged through other types of weather, it is relatively easy to discern hail damage. Serious splits will have sharp corners and edges rather than the regular wear and tear of a shingle that was damaged over time.

3. Flood Water

Roof damage, especially during rainy seasons will often lead to water damage. Water can seep through the roof and into the attic. If you find wet insulation or mold growth in the attic itself, then you may have a compromised roof. Although it is easier to miss water damage in the attic, you should always check after a large storm.

After hail has caused damage to your central Louisiana business or home, it is important to have it taken care of quickly. This type of damage can only get worse over time. In order to work through mitigation quickly, a restoration company can assess and work through the process with you.

Some Prevention Tips For Burst Pipes While On Vacation

3/14/2018 (Permalink)

Broken pipes can be difficult to fix, and the damage can be costly. It’s best to keep this issue from ever happening. If you’re traveling out of town for an extended period of time, specifically during the winter, there are several steps you can take to prevent your home from being flooded:

• Don’t turn down the heat too far. If you keep the heat on, even if you turn it lower than if you were home, it can keep your pipes warm enough to prevent them from freezing.

• Keep the water running. You don’t have to run the water on full. If you allow the faucet to drip, this helps relieve the pressure in your water system, possibly eliminating water pipe repair.

• Wrap the pipes. If you wrap pipes, especially those that are exposed, with towels or blankets, it provides extra insulation against the elements.

Keep an Eye on Your Alexandria Home From a Distance

If you’re going to be gone for several days, especially during the coldest parts of winter, it’s not a bad idea to have a neighbor, family member or friend stop by the house once in a while. This can be just a quick peek inside to verify there is no flooding or a broken pipe, or checking the thermostat to make sure plenty of warm air is circulating in your empty home.

You can also use video cameras that you can view from your phone or computer to check on your home. This won’t prevent a pipe from bursting, but it can allow you to at least get a professional there to do a water pipe repair sooner and prevent further damage. Call us right away!

Frozen Pipes: Prevention and Treatment

2/14/2018 (Permalink)

With the colder weather officially upon us, now is an excellent time to learn more about how to avoid frozen pipes, and the subsequent water damage that can occur if those pipes expand and burst. Though frozen pipes are a common occurrence, they are highly preventable.

SERVPRO of Alexandria offers the following tips for preventing frozen pipes and mitigating potential damage that they can cause.

  • Insulate all the exposed pipes in your home. Especially where they may be unheated, such as the basement, attic, garage, crawl space, and under kitchen and bathroom cabinets.
  • Keep the temperature the same during the day and at night. By temporarily suspending the use of lower temperatures in the evening, you can prevent a costly repair job if pipes freeze and burst.
  • Close any inside values that supply water outdoors and open the outside value to properly drain excess water that may be in the pipes.
  • In drastically cold temperatures, let your faucet trickle. While you may be concerned about wasting water, running water is less likely to freeze.
  • Remove, drain, and store hoses used outdoors. Keep outside valves open so that any water remaining in the pipe can expand without causing it to break.
  • If you plan to be away from home for an extended period of time, leave the heat on and set to a temperature no lower than 55° F.

Found a Frozen Pipe? Thaw It Out:

  • If you turn on a faucet and only a few drips come out, suspect a frozen pipe. Typically, frozen pipes are found along exterior walls or where your water service enters your home through the foundation.
  • Make sure the faucet remains on while treating the pipes, as the flowing water will help to melt the ice within the pipe.
  • Apply heat to the section of pipe using an electric heating pad, an electric hair dryer, or by wrapping pipes with towels soaked in hot water. Do not use a blowtorch, kerosene or propane heater, or other open flame device.
  • Check all other faucets in your home to find out if you have additional frozen pipes. If one pipe freezes, others may freeze too.

Should you experience a loss resulting from water damage, turn off the water supply as soon as possible, and call SERVPRO of Alexandria immediately. The longer you wait to call, the greater the chance of mold growth and unrecoverable property. SERVPRO of Alexandria professionals have the expertise to prevent or mitigate the devastating effects that water damage can have.

After the Flood - Then What?

2/13/2018 (Permalink)

After the Flood - Then What?

Nobody expected that the bayou could rise that far. It never had before. Now, the house is a muddy mess of debris, water and extensive damage. For some people, moving would be the first thought that came to mind. However, others want to stay in their homes, repair the water damage, and live on in the house they love.

Flood damage is more than just the standing water left after the bayou or creek recedes. It's ruined carpets and furniture, wet plaster and more. Water in the home or business is just the start of the problems. Without proper clean-up and sanitizing, mold can grow, floor damage can be permanent and drywall can be ruined. It is imperative to immediately start the restoration process to help limit the damage and mounting costs. A call to a professional water mitigation company should be the first step taken by a home owner after flooding occurs.

Water cleanup begins with bringing in equipment to extract the water in the home. Pumps and specialized vacuums are used to suck up the water. Restoration is a process. Once the puddles have been cleared, the next step will begin. The water damage will be in the walls, floors and furnishings. Drying is imperative to help stop the damage and to prevent mold from growing.

Fans, dehumidifiers and other equipment will be brought in to help dry out the water in walls and moisture from furnishings and floors. Thoroughly drying water in the home will save thousands of dollars worth of damage later.

Restoration from the devastation of flood damage is not an easy process. A professional service should be called to handle the process so that it is done correctly. For instance, not many individuals would know that after the water in their business is removed or the water in their home is dried, more steps are still necessary. Sanitizing the surfaces, furnishings and anything else the water touched should be done.

Water in the business or home could have left a foul odor. Professionals can remove the lingering odors left even after the water cleanup. Mitigation professionals know how to use fogging equipment and industrial air scrubbers to help remove the last traces of the water damage.

After the restoration process of water cleanup, drying, sanitizing and odor elimination, there is still one last step in the water damage mitigation process - repairs. Water in a business can damage walls, carpeting and flooring. Drywall may need to be replaced. Electrical outlets and wiring should be checked for damage. Water in a business may have warped sub-flooring, damaged floor joists and wrecked major appliances. Time is money, so flood damage needs to be taken care of as quickly as possible. Quick yet thorough mitigation will get a business back up and running after flood damage has occurred.

Storms, floods and even appliance malfunctions like a dishwasher overflow can cause homes and businesses the headaches of having to deal with the water cleanup process. Nobody wants to go through it, but when it happens a person shouldn't go through it alone. Professionals who know how to deal with the devastation left behind are the best option for a quick, safe restoration. Since professional water damage restoration companies have the equipment and training to handle cleaning, drying and even rebuilding homes and businesses, they should be the first choice for mitigation.

Sure, the damage is devastating and overwhelming. Of course, nobody wants to go through flooding and the after-effects. The reality is that these occurrences can and do happen every day. The good news is that there are people specifically trained to restore homes and businesses to their pre-flood conditions.

Always be prepared before a hurricane strikes

2/12/2018 (Permalink)

At SERVPRO of Alexandria, we want to make certain you and your family are prepared before the next storm strikes. We urge you to review the following preparedness tips to help safeguard your loved ones in the event of a hurricane:
Design a Family Plan Devise an evacuation plan with your family and chose a designated meeting place in case of separation. It is also worthwhile to conduct practice drills to make certain all family members are familiar with the plan. Create an Emergency Supply Kit This kit should include the following: first aid items, blankets, flashlights, cash, fresh water, nonperishable food items, candles, matches, necessary medication, a radio with batteries, personal hygiene products, baby formula and diapers (if needed), and all important documents should be placed in waterproof document storage bags. Prepare Your Home In anticipation of a hurricane, it is a good idea to prepare the outside of your home from damage caused by wind and debris. Boarding up windows and other glass portions of the home is a good way to prevent breakage.  It is important to know that taping windows does not prevent them from breaking. Also, remember to check around your home for hanging tree limbs and shrubs that need to be trimmed. Fill Your Gas Tank It is always a good idea to make sure your car's gas tank is full, just in case an emergency evacuation is ordered.  Often times, towns that are in an emergency situation can "shut down," leaving gas stations inoperable. During or after any storm, you can count on SERVPRO of Alexandria to be prepared no matter what the weather brings. Our highly trained staff and state-of-the-art equipment is ready 24/7/365 to help clean-up and restore damaged property, "Like it never even happened."®

High Humidity And Mold Damage In Alexandria, Pineville and Ball

2/11/2018 (Permalink)

Molds need moisture to grow, and SERVPRO knows a remediation job is not complete until the source is found and eliminated.

High Humidity And Mold Damage

Unintended consequences of modern building methods used in areas like Alexandria, Pineville or Ball may include damage to structures and contents. Tightly sealed windows, doors, and other building materials help conserve energy. Lack of adequate ventilation in homes built since the 1970s lets moisture build, contributing to mold growth. Once established, the mold colonies need professional remediation.

If you notice an “off” or musty smell in your central Louisiana home, would it surprise you that mold damage could be the cause? In our climate, both building materials and the systems we use to heat and cool must handle extremes of temperature and humidity. Moisture levels and temperatures that get out of balance support the growth of fungal colonies out of the many mold spores always in our environment. Standard cleaning methods are inadequate to control a mold infestation. Our expert mold remediation crews contain and remove mold growth, and then sanitize the affected areas to inhibit future outbreaks.

Molds need moisture to grow, and SERVPRO of Alexandria knows a remediation job is not complete until the source is found and eliminated. In a central Louisiana home, high humidity levels can be the culprit. When ambient humidity rises above 60 percent, some species of mold absorb that airborne moisture and multiply. During our summers, the air is often sticky, and if air conditioning or dehumidifiers are not used consistently, mold takes advantage of the water vapor.

Winters also pose the risk of high interior humidity as our HVAC systems or freestanding humidifiers run constantly to battle the dryness of the heated air. Parents run humidifiers when children struggle with allergies or upper respiratory infections, often making things worse if mold develops and its byproducts irritate susceptible individuals. Consult a healthcare provider if you're worried about a mold and health status connection.

SERVPRO of Alexandria crew members test for humidity levels and seek for other hidden pockets of moisture when we respond to a mold event. All technicians work with you to reduce home humidity to safe levels between 30 and 50 percent. Calibration of the humidifier in your HVAC system may be a solution, and if mold has developed in the ductwork, we offer cleaning, sealing, and disinfection of those spaces.

The reduction or elimination of other humidifying events also helps, including running bathroom and kitchen exhaust fans, checking dryer vents for obstructions, and deemphasizing the use of room humidifiers. SERVPRO employees train in advanced water removal and drying techniques. Should our meters and scanners reveal water behind a wall, beneath a cabinet, or in any other area we deal with it. Water issues must be resolved to avoid mold problems in the future.

SERVPRO of Alexandria has the experience and training to remediate mold damage in your home. Call (318) 427-7511 to start development of a plan to assess the issues and address the problem professionally.

There is No Need to Panic after Experiencing Water Damage in Alexandria

2/10/2018 (Permalink)

SERVPRO Uses Professional Grade Equipment When Restoring Your Home after Water Damage

Without experience in water damage restoration, it is hard to determine what you need to replace and what is salvageable after the unfortunate incident takes place. You also need an expert to control the damage and perform removal and cleanup activities on your Alexandria, Pineville or Ball property. It is equally important to understand some of the procedures that professionals perform when restoring your property.

One of the first steps that our SERVPRO technicians carry out when mitigating water damage on your Alexandria property is identifying the extent of the damage. When determining the level of wetness and tracking the moisture levels, the team uses specialized tools such as moisture sensors, thermo-hygrometers, and moisture meters. Once we find the wet areas, the next step is to dry them to their preloss condition.

It means water removal is a crucial procedure towards making the restoration a success. Our IICRC certified technicians may use extractors to remove the water. In most cases, we use pumps when there is standing water in the area. Portable extractors are useful when removing water from areas with limited access; otherwise, we employ the truck mounted ones when the site is so big. Apart from water removal, these devices can clean carpets and upholstery.

Whether we are performing deodorization to neutralize the smells or using dehumidifiers to increase the rate of evaporation, observing safety measures is so important. As a result, our SERVPRO of Alexandria team puts on the necessary safety gear and advise our clients to stay away from the site to avoid any probable injury. We also work towards preventing possible hazards by addressing any sagging wet ceilings and turning off electrical circuits that are likely to short circuit.

SERVPRO of Alexandria aims at making your property appear as if there was no water damage with the use of the state of the art equipment and techniques. Call us at (318) 427-7511 when faced with any size of disaster and leave the rest to us.

Understanding Your Flooded Toilet

1/24/2018 (Permalink)

It might seem like a simple issue, but a flooded toilet is a major problem for a lot of companies. That’s because it’s a sign of sewer damage, and when it includes any kind of backup, there’s a serious biohazard risk involved. To handle it properly, you need to work with a sewage company that can clean the area properly, containing any biological materials and preventing water damage in the process.

How Toilets Flood

Toilets are simple mechanical devices that rely on water pressure and gravity for the bulk of their operational energy. What does that mean for you? It means there are only a few reasons why they would flood, including the following:

• The flooded toilet has a clog in the bowl or trap, preventing water from cycling out.
• There’s a problem with running water that won’t stop, overwhelming the toilet’s ability to clear it in time.
• There’s a clog causing sewer damage further down the line, past the point where you can see its location.

Typically, if there’s running water but no clog, the toilet will automatically flush or run, and there won’t be a lot of risk for contamination. When there’s a clog in the line, though, the toilet might overflow if there are multiple flushes or a running water problem. The most serious issue is a clog in the drain line itself, which could lead to a backup. This is often the most difficult cleanup.

Calling in the Professionals

Whenever a flooded toilet backs up far enough to cause water damage, it’s also creating a contamination risk that needs to be cleaned properly. That’s why you should have a plan for calling in cleanup experts in Alexandria, LA. whenever your company is dealing with any kind of sewer backup. It will keep your employees safe, minimize damage to your facilities, and ensure that cleanup causes to least disruption possible.

When you work with professionals in Alexandria, LA. who have the certification to handle these issues, you can turn back sewer damage and improve your facilities. That’s the difference proper cleaning and repair makes.

Sight – Watch for the appearance of mold. It may be black, discolored, fuzzy or slimy. You will notice a suspect area growing overtime. Like most fungi, it likes damp areas. Regularly check and clean areas that have a high humidity or tend to collect dampness.

Health – Because mold is not always visible, it may not be apparent that you have a mold problem. If you notice a musty odor when you are at the office or you spot water damaged areas, you may need to hire a mold remediation specialist. If you do have a mold problem, you may notice that you feel better when you are away from home.

Mycotoxins

Common Causes of Commercial Fires

1/24/2018 (Permalink)

Fire can occur any time of day or night in a commercial building. There are different causes of fire outbreak, which include electrical fire, utility room fire, and gas leak among more. If your office catches fire, you need not to panic. The first and most important step is to make sure that you are at a safe distance.

Fire outbreak has devastating results as it burns items it comes across and leaves both smoke damage and soot damage in the adjacent rooms. Fire damage can bring down a once vibrant business, including those fitted with fire sprinkler system. You need to minimize the commercial fire damage immediately through fire suppression.

The firefighter services play an important role as they come to your aid within minutes before the fire sprinkler system is overwhelmed. Contact the local firefighter company provider before things get out of hand. Their fire truck has fire hose that dispenses water in the burning areas. The fire sprinkler system helps to in fire suppression before the arrival of the fire truck.

The firefighter with their fire truck connects the fire hose for water. This will allow them to put off the fire in the quickest time possible. A fire truck is equipped with other tools that enable a fire fighter to undertake fire restoration. They also have extra fire hose in case the building is higher for them to reach the sections under fire. All this is to ensure effective fire suppression.

The cranes on the fire truck aid a firefighter to reach closer to the sections of the building that is burning using a fire hose. Utility room fire is a priority because it contains valuable yet vulnerable equipment. If utility room fire is the source, the professionals know what to do without causing further damage or being electrocuted.

Why use professional fire restoration?

After the fire has been put off, the professionals can plan and know how to handle the fire damage issue. They first ensure that the sources of fire are under control and put off completely including the utility room fire. They also seal off the area from intruders and onlookers who could interfere with their work. The professionals sort out the things that have burned and put those items that can be repaired in a safe place.

The commercial fire damage services also assist in the documentation to ensure that you do not struggle while filing for compensation. They would also clean up the charred mess and water that has been spilled while putting out the fire. Fire restoration also begins with an inspection of the building to assess whether the fire causes further damages.

Professional fire restoration services are well equipped and skilled to handle any issue that may arise in the process. Commercial fire damage leads to a major loss in the office and other utilities. Some would require replacement while others can be repaired.

Soot damage and smoke damage restoration

Fire damage has many consequences, which include smoke damage and soot damage. The smoke damage leaves a choking odor from the chemical burnt in plastics and wood among other. It makes other rooms have the same smell. Soot damage results from the dark part of the smoke that paints on the walls. The professional’s commercial fire damage restoration services have ideas on how to clean it up and repaint the walls.

With these professionals, you are sure that it would not take long before you are back to business. They also provide mitigation services where they point out the cause whether it was an electrical fire. Also, they make sure that the in the event of an electrical fire, the wiring system is replaced. The reason is that electrical fire leads to burning of the wiring system making it unfit to pass current.

The inspection of the building is usually to ensure no major damage that has been caused by the fire. This is to prevent exposing the occupants to more harm. A proper fire damage restoration would ensure that no more utility fire outbreaks. The fire sprinkler system would also be replaced to help detect incidents of fire much better. They usually respond on time to ensure effective fire suppression, minimize soot damage and smoke damage to the building.

Mold Removal and The Implications as Far as Remediation

1/24/2018 (Permalink)

Mold Removal and The Implications as Far as Remediation

Mold is a very difficult agent to cope with when it becomes pervasive enough to affect people. It is an interesting living organism that usually grows out of sight, and so people don't think about it very much unless it directly affects them.

This microbial growth can look like mildew or fungus which are not particularly harmful, but mold is an entirely different story. Mold can cause health effects because it gives off spores that when breathed in can take up residence inside of us and grow.

Mold can grow in the midst of fungus and mildew, masking its presence, so when a mold cleanup and mitigation procedure is undertaken, the mildew and fungus are usually cleaned up too so as not to miss any of the moldy areas that might be hiding.

Mold does put out millions of spores as this microbial growth grows and matures. These spores float through the air until they land on an area that is conducive to its growth and then it plants itself and grows. It needs a dark area, no moving air, and a source of moisture to grow. If any one of those three items is missing, it cannot grow at all.

If a homeowner or business owner discovers any mold that is growing, they would be well advised not to attempt to clear it up by themselves, as they can endanger themselves, and probably will not be successful in getting rid of it. Many people will attempt to wipe the microbial growth away with a cloth, but all they accomplish is to wipe off the top and leave the roots. The roots penetrate into just about all surfaces except glass, and unless they are destroyed, the substance will just regrow.

mold cleanup and mitigation process must begin as soon as possible after it the microbial growth discovered, and an environmental hygienist should be involved due to the expertise of such an individual. The environmental hygienist will be able to tell the difference between the moldy areas and the mildew and fungus, and then prescribe the proper treatment for the mold cleanup operation and the mitigation procedures.

The environmental hygienist and the cleanup workers will wear protective clothing, gloves, and masks to protect themselves and they may cordon off various sections of a building to do the cleaning and removal of any items that are contaminated. Entire rooms, carpeting, walls, flooring or ceilings might have to be replaced in the process, depending on what is contaminated.

The mold cleanup and mitigation procedures are very carefully planned out by the environmental hygienist so that everything will go smoothly with no chance of error or contamination beyond the affected area. Once the offending substance is removed, and the area is sanitized, life can get back to normal for the occupants of the home or business. What To Do When Mold Is Found In Your Alexandria Home

1/24/2018 (Permalink)

What To Do When Mold Is Found In A Alexandria Home

A Mold or microbial growth, such as mildew or fungus, may be present in a home in Alexandria and hiding where the homeowner cannot see.  Alexandria, Pineville and Ball homeowners must ensure they have taken steps to keep the house clean, and this article explains how the community may call a mitigation company for help, so they may begin mold cleanup as soon as possible.  Each step that is taken to keep the home clean will account for Louisiana weather, and it will allow for someone to ensure they are as comfortable as possible.

#1:  What Does The Environmental Hygienist Do?

There are quite a few people who need an environmental hygienist, but they do not know what the professional does when they arrive at the home.  Someone who has asked for help from an environmental hygienist will note they get a full inspection, industrial gear is used to clean
the house and an honest assessment of the situation is offered.  After inspection, Industrial Hygienist will write a protocol to determine exactly how the house must be cleaned to remove any dangerous microbial growth. The
company will ensure they have the appropriate crew on the scene that is capable of cleaning the house quickly, and they will offer a number of services to the homeowner that are helpful.  They will show the homeowner where the house has been affected by mold or mildew, and they will explain the nature of each growth or fungus.  Mold cleanup takes some time, and it
may begin just after the inspection.

#2:  How Long Does The Process Last?

The process of cleanup will last more than a day in many cases, and the hygienist's report determines how much must be done for their work to be complete.  They will be honest with the homeowner, and they will take their time to ensure the house is safe once again.  Anyone who orders service in Alexandria, LA. must ensure they have accounted for the time needed for cleaning, according to the hygienist's report , and they will notice it is quite simple to
account for the days that it takes when there is no other choice.

#3:  Testing Air Quality

Air in the home is retested to ensure it is improving on every cleaning.  The company may do quite a lot of work that will take out every spore, and they cannot know they have been successful until the air in the house has been retested. Often times, the air in the house will be fair easier to breathe because it does not have mold spores present, and the air quality test will show any spores that are still in the air.  It may be possible for the homeowner to see the results of each test, and they will know if things are improving as they should.  The evidence that is
given to the homeowner will help them feel more comfortable with the work they have ordered, and they will see a change happening in the house that is not always visibly apparent.

#4:  Order Service At Once

Homeowners must order service from a hygienist in Louisiana as soon as possible because they cannot allow a microbial growth to sit in their home for such a long time.  They could begin to experience health troubles that are related to their home's poor state, and professional help to determine the next step is how to proceed.  In extensive cases, the homeowner may need to move out of their house until it is cleaned, and they will not be allowed in until the space is cleaned through and through.

#5:  Listen To The Hygienist

The hygienist who comes to the house will offer quite a bit of information about how the home was affected, what must be cleaned, and how it must be cleaned.  There are many steps in the process that may be taken at any time, and the hygienist will explain each step to ensure their customers are not confused about what is to be done.  The hygienist may offer cleaning products that are to be used during the course of the year, and they will show the homeowner how simple it is to clean up any latent spores they find.  Things that will cause growths in the home are repaired or removed, and the house will become a much better environment for everyone when they walk through the door.

Homeowner's in the area can ensure that they have found a number of different ways to keep their home clean and fresh by contacting professionals when they need assistance.  Each step in the process is a help to the homeowner who is breathing in musty air and potentially harmful air.

How To Prevent Mold Damage After a Flood

1/24/2018 (Permalink)

A flood in your home is a serious issue. In addition to the water ruining your belongings, carpet and other structures, if left too long, it can also cause bacteria and mold growth. Follow these tips to take care of mold and prevent avoidable damage after a flood.

Take Safety Precautions

As soon as you discover a flood in your Alexandria, LA. home, unplug all electronics and remove all furniture and other movable items right away. Remember the following:

• Televisions
• Gaming consoles
• Smartphones and tablets
• Lamps
• Medical equipment
• Other electronics

Disconnect the power to prevent electric shock during the cleanup process. Remember, the faster you complete this process, the more likely you are to save many of your more expensive belongings. Pull up carpet and underpadding, which can likely can't be saved. You may be able to save the carpet if it’s cleaned quickly enough, but shrinkage is possible.

Remove the Water

You can remove the water in several ways. Without power, you'll need to use buckets, mops and old towels to remove as much of it as you can. If the sewers aren't backed up, simply pour the water down the drain. If they aren't working, pour it onto the lawn. If you have power, you can use a wet/dry vacuum to soak up much of the water, but be sure to plug it in far away from any flood damage to better prevent shock. Avoid extension cords, which can short and cause a shock as well. If the flood waters are too high, you might consider renting a sump pump. Remove the standing water as quickly as possible to prevent mold growth.

The Final Steps

After you remove the excess water, open windows and use fans and a dehumidifier to dry the rooms out. Ensure the drywall is still safe to avoid crumbling, and disinfect the area to remove bacteria that may have entered your home through the sewer lines. Don't forget about walls and non-upholstered furniture. Finally, use a mold control product throughout your home and let it dry overnight to ensure you remove any trace of a problem. This takes care of any mold starting to grow and prevents new mold growth.

After the fire is out, what should you do next?

12/11/2017 (Permalink)

First visit our page on what to do immediately after you've experienced fire damage.

When it comes to cleaning and remediation of property with fire damage, SERVPRO of Alexandria first determines which cleaning methods to use on the various surfaces and materials in a structure. Structural items include framework, ceilings, doors, windows, floors and floor coverings, bath fixtures, cabinets, light fixtures and the HVAC system.  In simple terms, if something can't be carried out of a building, it is considered structure.

All materials and surfaces fall into two categories: Washable and Non-Washable.

Washable - These materials and surfaces can be cleaned using a water-based cleaning product. This is possible because using one will not further damage the item or surface (floor or wall) being cleaned. We maintain an extensive inventory of cleaners for every type.

Non-Washable - These are materials and surfaces that cannot be cleaned using a water-based cleaning product. Doing so would cause further damage to the material or surface. Non-washable methods include dry solvent, dry sponges/cloths, and vacuums.

Over the years, SERVPRO of Alexandria has seen many examples of what can happen when an unqualified company or individual tries to tackle fire damage restoration. The assumption, for many, is that cleaning and removing damaged items is easy. The truth is it’s hard work that requires special equipment and techniques. SERVPRO of Alexandria technicians are highly trained in property restoration. From initial and ongoing training at SERVPRO's Corporate Training Facility to regular IICRC industry certifications, our Professionals are equipped with the knowledge to restore your property.

Fire safety is key in fire prevention!

10/18/2017 (Permalink)

Fire safety is key in fire prevention!

According to the NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) there are on average of between 350,000 and 400,000 fires every year in the U.S.that is an average of 39.9 – 45.6 fires every hour!  That is a lot of house fires every year! Unfortunately a majority of these fires could have been prevented.

The key to fire prevention is fire safety awareness!

According to the NFPA the top 9 leading causes of house fires are as follows.

Cooking- 42% of all house fires are caused by cooking related incidents.  For instance, an oven or stove left unattended. Something most of us are guilty of, but should never do, is leaving something on the stove unattended.  Even if it’s only for a moment, disaster can strike in an instant.

Children playing with fire- It is really important to teach children about fire safety.  All too frequently a lighter and/or matches are left where children can reach them.  It is important to teach your children about fire safety and the reasons why they should never play with fire. Be sure to have this conversation not just one time but once a week just to be sure they don’t forget.

Smoking- People falling asleep while smoking may not seem like a big deal however smoking is the source of many house fires leading to almost 1,000 deaths a year.  Lit cigarettes accidentally dropped on a number of household items can quickly become large fires!  Please, if you smoke in your home (which we strongly recommend not doing), make sure you are awake enough to finish it or extinguish it!

Heating- Every winter we hear about a home catching fire due to a heating source. If you have a furnace, remember to have it serviced regularly.  A more common cause of heating related fires is small space heaters.  If you are using space heaters try to purchase ones that turn off automatically when bumped or flipped over.  Always keep space heaters on a flat surface with nothing around them i.e. curtains, chairs, clothes, ext.

Electrical- One of the leading culprits is the over-use of extension cords.  Surprisingly, just because there is an open plug doesn’t mean you can plug just ANYTHING into it.  Extension cords can safely pull a certain amount of amps, so be sure to have the right equipment for the job! You can figure out what extension cord is right for you simply by reading the label.  If there is ever any doubt, you are probably much better off to hire an electrician to provide you with permanent wiring.  It is also very advisable to have an electrician perform an annual checkup on your home’s wiring.

Candles- Candles are a completely preventable fire.  They should never be left unattended when all too often they are.  If you leave the room the candle should leave with you or be blown out. Forgotten candles are very dangerous. It is important that you always remember to blow them out when leaving the house, always double check!  Getting into this ritual could save you and your loved ones lives and a lot of grief.

Dryers- Dryers are all too often forgotten!  It is imperative for us to remember to empty out our dryer vents and be certain that they are properly vented.  Remember to maintain your dryer by cleaning the vents to the outside once a year.

Flammables in the House – There are a lot of products left around the home that are highly flammable (especially if the garage is attached to the home).  Be careful of where you place any flammable materials (fuels, oils, etc.).  Don’t place them next to a possible source of a fire as they can rapidly turn a bad situation into a disaster.  The simplest rule is to keep them contained and away from the home to the greatest extent possible.

Christmas Trees- It seems like nothing really sets the holiday mood like a live Christmas tree (great smell and just exceptionally authentic).  However, if you don’t keep it well watered and still proceed to wrap it with electrical cords (I mean… Christmas lights of course).  If you let it get too dry it can quickly result in a fire so just check it frequently and leave the lights off if you are going to be away from home for a while.

The fact of the matter is that most household fires are completely preventable.  Please be sure to exercise caution when it comes to your home.  Taking a few extra precautions can keep you and your loved ones safe!

Flash Floods Pose A Glaring Risk

6/13/2017 (Permalink)

Even small floods can cause major damage to your home or business.

If someone asked you which weather event causes the most damage, most people would probably jump to say hurricanes or tornadoes. However, according to the NOAA, flooding kills more people each year than tornadoes, hurricanes, and lightning.

Flooding can cause damage quickly, and can often occur with little to no warning. That said, it is possible to be safe and be prepared when flood risk is present or actively occurring.

Additionally, Floodsmart.gov reports that in the past 5 years, all 50 states have experienced floods or flash floods. According to the American Red Cross, floods cause more damage in the United States every year than any other weather related disaster.

If you find yourself caught in a flooding situation it seems obvious, but it is important to remember to stay away from flood waters, no matter the height of the standing water. A mere six inches of swiftly moving water could easily sweep you off your feet. If you happen to be driving when you get caught in a flood, move to high ground immediately! Most cars can get swept away by less than two feet of moving water. If flood waters are rapidly rising while you are driving through a flooded road, exit your vehicle and move yourself to higher ground. Value your safety first! Also be sure to keep children out of and away from any flooding water or potential flood zones during heightened risk times.

It does not matter if you live near a coastline, in the city, the mountains, near a tiny river, or even in the desert...there is always potential risk for flooding and flood damage. Just because you and your property have never experienced a flood or flood damage does not mean you never will!

20% of flood insurance claims come from moderate to low risk area. On average, flooding costs $3.5 billion in annual losses for the USA.

Even minor floods have the potential to cause major damage to a structure when it isn't treated quickly and properly. This includes mold damage from improper drying of flooding.

The cleanup can be overwhelming, but that is why SERVPRO of Alexandria, Pineville and Ball is here for. Our crews are trained to handle an size disaster quickly and efficiently.

When you feel like you're drowning in water damage, SERVPRO helps you stay above water!

Saving your Home from Black Mold

5/31/2017 (Permalink)

Mold in your central Louisiana home can be a very serious issue!

Mold in a Louisiana home can be a very serious ordeal. While there are several things that can affect whether your home has mold growing or not, the development of mold comes down to just a few things.

If you are diligent about your problems and take immediate action, most of the time you can prevent mold from occurring. However, if you don't take care of the problem, you may never be able to get rid of the mold. Mold if not remediated properly will continue to come back, even if you repair the area that was moldy or decayed. This is why it's crucial to take care of the issue in a timely fashion to ensure that your home isn't the cause expensive repairs.

Where Does Mold Come From?

Mold damage in Rapides Parish doesn't just come from nowhere. There are mold spores all around you. They come from outside in. Mold spores can float in through an open door or window or even be brought into your home from your clothes. Once mold spores settle if they find a wet area in your home it can start to grow.

The best way to deter microbial growth is by, eliminating any leaks on the siding, roofing, and windows that might let moisture into your home. Check and repair leaky sinks immediately to prevent moisture build up, and turn on exhaust fans when you're steaming up the house. Poor ventilation and airflow cause microbial growth as well. When areas are well ventilated, mold spores have a difficult time sticking to counter tops, walls, and floors.

Why is Flood Water Dangerous?

5/16/2017 (Permalink)

Once flood waters set in you may be tempted to splash around and have a little fun in a seemingly hopeless situation. The water is here to stay a while so... why not?

Whatever you do, stay out of the water!

Flood water can be hazardous to your health even when properly vaccinated.

Flood waters can contain runoff from fields, bacteria from almost everywhere, and contaminants such as toxic chemicals (like gasoline or oil) or wastes (from animals and humans).

That is why in areas of the world where there is flooding from tsunamis, etc., those villages generally have a large outbreak of cholera, dysentery, and other water borne diseases.

And I haven’t even mentioned snakes yet! No one should ever treat flood waters like a stroll through your swimming pool. They are a health hazard, and can cause acute illnesses, particularly in children. You should never let your children play in flood water.

Here are some of the top reasons to stay out of flood water:

  • Raw Sewage- Raw sewage is germ infested and could contain disease causing micro-organisms including but not limited to E Coli, Giardia, Cryptosporidium, Hepatitis A Cholera and more! Open cuts and wounds can become severely infected by contaminated water.
  •  Sharp and Dangerous Objects- Flood water picks up everything in its path and is generally murky and muddy. Sharp and dangerous objects pose potential risks as they are hidden from site and can puncture the skin.
  • Hidden Rocks, Ditches and Potholes-  Hidden rocks, ditches and potholes may cause you to lose your footing and fall.
  • Storm Drains, Storm Pipes and Manholes- During a flood, as water recedes, storm drains storm pipes and manholes become powerful suction devices that can sweep away a child even an adult in an instant!

Keep your family safe. When water is on the rise remind them that though it looks tempting to play in, that it is important to stay out of the water as much as possible.

If for any reason you have no choice but to come in contact with flood water be sure to wash everything as thoroughly as possible.

If you live in Central Louisiana and are a victim of flood water damage please do not hesitate to call SERVPRO of Alexandria, Pineville and Ball.

Does Homeowners Insurance Cover Water Damage?

2/13/2017 (Permalink)

Water damage caused by a pipe burst in Alexandria, LA.

You're catching up on some laundry and everything's going fine. The next thing you know, water starts gushing across your floor when your washing machine water supply hose suddenly fails. You get the water mopped up, but a few days later your wood laminate floor starts buckling. So, you may wonder, will your homeowners insurance cover the damage?

In this case, your insurance policy will likely provide coverage. Most standard homeowners policies provide protection from water damage if the cause is sudden and accidental. According to the Insurance Information Institute, you'll likely be protected if, for instance, your drywall is drenched after your water heater ruptures or an upstairs pipe bursts and water saturates the ceiling below.

What's Not Covered?

Homeowners insurance does not cover all types of water damage, however.

Damage from unresolved maintenance issues: While your insurance will probably help cover the cost of replacing or repairing a damaged floor if your dishwasher suddenly goes on the fritz, coverage generally will not kick in if the damage results from an unresolved maintenance issue, such as continuous leaking near a faucet or other plumbing fixture.

Replacing or repairing the source of the water damage: Most insurance policies will not cover the source of the water damage. So while your policy may cover the cost of tearing out and replacing that damaged floor, you shouldn't expect it to cover the cost of replacing your broken dishwasher or washing machine.

Water backup from an outside sewer or drain: You also will not typically be covered by a traditional homeowners policy if water backs into your home through an outside sewer or drain. You may, however, be able to purchase additional sewer or water backup coverage that may help provide protection in case of such an event.

Flood: No type of flood damage, no matter the source of the water, is covered by standard homeowners policies. Flooding, for example, can occur from storms, over-saturated ground, overflowing or surging bodies of water such as rivers, ponds, lakes and oceans, You can, however, purchase flood insurance through the National Flood Insurance Program.

Restaurant Fire Safety

1/30/2017 (Permalink)

Keep your restaurant safe with these tips. If you do experience a fire, call SERVPRO of Alexandria to help get you back to business!

Restaurants—with their open flames, hot equipment, electrical connections, cooking oils, cleaning chemicals and paper products—have all the ingredients for a fire to flame out of control. Nearly 8,000 eating and drinking establishments report a fire each year, according to 2006-2010 data tabulated by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) in Quincy, Mass. These fires caused an annual average of $246 million in direct property damage.

A fire can devastate your business, leading to lost revenues and even permanent closure. But there are steps you can take to prevent fires and minimize the damage.

Preventative maintenance

Install an automatic fire-suppression system in the kitchen. This is crucial because 57% of restaurant fires involve cooking equipment. These systems automatically dispense chemicals to suppress the flames and also have a manual switch. Activating the system automatically shuts down the fuel or electric supply to nearby cooking equipment. Have your fire-suppression system professionally inspected semiannually. The manufacturer can refer you to an authorized distributor for inspection and maintenance.

Keep portable fire extinguishers as a backup. You’ll need Class K extinguishers for kitchen fires involving grease, fats and oils that burn at high temperatures. Class K fire extinguishers are only intended to be used after the activation of a built-in hood suppression system. Keep Class ABC extinguishers elsewhere for all other fires (paper, wood, plastic, electrical, etc.).

Schedule regular maintenance on electrical equipment, and watch for hazards like frayed cords or wiring, cracked or broken switch plates and combustible items near power sources.

• Have your exhaust system inspected for grease buildup. The NFPA Fire Code calls for quarterly inspections of systems in high-volume operations and semiannual inspections in moderate-volume operations. Monthly inspections are required for exhaust systems serving solid-fuel cooking equipment, like wood- or charcoal-burning ovens.

Staff training

Train your staff to:

Find and use a fire extinguisher appropriately.  An acronym you may find helpful is PAST – pull out the pin, aim at the base, make a sweeping motion, (be) ten feet away.

Clean up the grease. Cleaning exhaust hoods is especially important, since grease buildup can restrict air flow. Be sure to also clean walls and work surfaces; ranges, fryers, broilers, grills and convection ovens; vents and filters.

Never throw water on a grease fire. Water tossed into grease will cause grease to splatter, spread and likely erupt into a larger fire.

Remove ashes from wood- and charcoal-burning ovens at least once a day. Store outside in metal containers at least 10 feet from any buildings or combustible materials.

• Make sure cigarettes are out before dumping them in a trash receptacle. Never smoke in or near storage areas.

• Store flammable liquids properly. Keep them in their original containers or puncture-resistant, tightly sealed containers. Store containers in well-ventilated areas away from supplies, food, food-preparation areas or any source of flames.

• Tidy up to avoid fire hazards. Store paper products, linens, boxes and food away from heat and cooking sources. Properly dispose of soiled rags, trash, cardboard boxes and wooden pallets at least once a day.

Use chemical solutions properly. Use chemicals in well-ventilated areas, and never mix chemicals unless directions call for mixing. Immediately clean up chemical spills.

Be prepared: Have an emergency plan

If a fire breaks out in your restaurant, your staff must take control of the situation and lead customers to safety.

• Be prepared to power down. Train at least one worker per shift how to shut off gas and electrical power in case of emergency.

Have an evacuation plan. Designate one staff member per shift to be evacuation manager. That person should be in charge of calling 911, determining when an evacuation is necessary and ensuring that everyone exits the restaurant safely.  Ensure your staff know where the closest exits are, depending on their location in the restaurant.  Remember that the front door is an emergency exit.

• Offer emergency training. Teach new employees about evacuation procedures and the usage of fire-safety equipment. Give veteran staff members a refresher course at least annually.

Understanding Mold

When water intrudes into your property, mold growth can start in as little as 48 hours. Consider the following mold facts:

  •  Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
  •  Mold spores are microscopic, float along in the air, and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
  •  Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce toxins harmful to humans and pets.
  •  Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise the mold may return.
  •  Mold often produces a strong, musty odor, and that odor can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
  •  Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.

Simple Steps for Preventing Water Damage in Your House

12/1/2015 (Permalink)

The first step is to examine the appliances in your home for leaks.

Water damage can slowly destroy a building. A problem many homeowners face is that there are multiple points throughout the house where water leaks can occur. This can make detecting and stopping water damage difficult. You should know about some simple steps to help prevent water damage in your home.

Examine Appliances for Leaks

The first step is to examine the appliances in your home for leaks. Appliances that use water such as washing machines and dishwashers can potentially cause a large amount of damage over time. You want to look at the hoses and connections that attach the appliances to the water supply. Feel the hoses and look for leaks, corrosion or other damage. Replace any damaged or leaking hoses immediately. You also want to check the ground under and around appliances in case there is other damage inside allowing water to escape.

Thoroughly Inspect Your Plumbing

One of the largest potential sources of water damage in your home is the plumbing attached to your sinks and fixtures. Even a small leak can release gallons of water that will rot away the floors and structure of your house over several months. You need to thoroughly inspect your plumbing on a regular basis. This does not take long. Look at the pipes under your sinks, faucets and around your showers. Look behind your toilets. You want to look for any unexplained moisture, rusted connections or signs of damage on the floor and walls. If you do find a problem, then call a licensed plumber immediately to repair the pipes.

Maintain Your Water Heater

Your water heater can do damage to your house if it is not maintained. Your water heater is not intended to last forever. As it starts to wear down over the years, it will become more of a threat. The seals and structure of your water heater will begin to fail. This can allow water to constantly leak out and onto the floor beneath. The result could be foundation damage if the water heater is in the basement or damage to the floor in other parts of the home. You want to maintain your water heater, have it inspected every year or two and replace it every ten to fifteen years.

Know the Location of Your Main Shutoff Valves

A final step is to know the location of the main shutoff valves in your home. These are the valves responsible for allowing water to enter your home from a municipal supply or well. Memorize the location so that you can quickly cut off the water to your house if a major leak occurs. This can stop water damage from getting worse. Take a close look at the valves and make certain you understand how to use them.

Our Water Damage Restoration Process

Every water damage situation is a little different, and requires a unique solution, but the general process stays the same. The steps listed below illustrate our process for the “typical” water damage emergency.

Step 1: Emergency Contact

Step 2: Inspection and Damage Assessment

Step 3: Water Removal/Water Extraction

Step 4: Drying and Dehumidification

Step 5: Cleaning and Repair

Step 6: Restoration

How Fire Damage Services Can Help With Your Alexandria Home Restoration Process

12/1/2015 (Permalink)

Fire Has Badly Damaged This Roof

Your Alexandria Home Deserves Quick Fire Damage Support

As many restoration experts know, fire damage can seriously degrade your Alexandria home in several ways. First of all, the fire can engulf many of your valuable items in its flames and then spread through your private living space within a matter of minutes. Following the fire, all of the items in your private living space will likely be covered with soot, smoke, and ash. Additionally, your property will probably suffer water damage because of efforts to put out the fire. The cleanup process that follows the fire will likely be difficult as well as time-consuming. Typically, the cleanup process will necessitate the use of special equipment that you do not own. However, as a homeowner, you can easily access and utilize professional fire damage services to restore your home. Doing so enables you to avoid the anxiety-inducing effects of handling the cleanup, repair, and restoration processes alone. To learn whether a fire damage restoration service like SERVPRO would be right for you, consider the basic information outlined below:

Fire Damage Services Include Timely Clean-Up

When you hire a professional fire restoration company, it's important to know that they understand how time-sensitive the cleaning process is. Just hours after the fire has transpired, the wooden furniture within the home can permanently discolor and swell. Additionally, the fire can cause your drywall to warp and soften while separating carpet from its backing. It's also important to note that mildew and mold can start growing within your home just 48 to 72 hours following the fire. Since this is the case, it is important for you to have excess moisture removed from your house as quickly as possible. Typically, a professional restoration company will provide you with round-the-clock emergency services so that the cleanup process can begin immediately.

Fire Damage Professionals Make Your Home Secure And Safe

In addition to offering expedient cleanup services, the very keystone to a successful restoration, a SERVPRO expert examines your home's structure to identify any water or fire damage that may have transpired. Whether your Alexandria  home's structure is constructed of wood, brick or block, materials have probably endured substantive damage as a result of the fire. If the fire damage is severe enough, you may need major renovations so that your home becomes safe and secure again. A professional restoration company will provide all of the services necessary to ensure that your home is safe and secure following the cleanup process.

Conclusion

Fire damage has an adverse effect on the appearance and possibly, structural integrity of your home. When your residential property is subjected to water damage following a natural disaster, it's important that you start and complete the restoration process as quickly as possible. This is the case for several reasons, including the fact that failure to resolve water damage issues can result in structural damage and mold infestation. Although many people are inclined to complete the water damage restoration process as a do-it-yourself project, attaining professional assistance will entail a higher rate of success. Learn more about why hiring a professional water damage remediation company is important by reviewing the following short outline:

The Benefits Of Hiring A Professional Water Damage Restoration Company
Numerous benefits result from having a team of trained damage restoration experts address and resolve your water damage issues. Some of the benefits include:

Use Of Specialized Equipment
Water damage specialists have access to a broad range of specialized equipment that can be used to optimize and expedite the cleanup, drying, and repair processes. From dehumidifiers to chemical cleaners, professionals will utilize several devices to ensure that the job is completed with speed and skill.

Safety
As industry professionals know, there are three categories of water damage. These categories range from clean water to black water. Each category marks an increase in danger and represents an increasing level of health hazards to individuals exposed to the water. Water damage experts know the difference between the three types of water, and they are highly skilled in removing them in a safe manner that poses no threat to themselves, you, and your loved ones.

Hidden Damage
Water damage is not always noticeable to the human eye. In fact, moisture can become trapped in drywall, behind subfloors and walls, and underneath your carpet. Water Damage Preventative Measure to Protect Your Central Lousiana Home Offered by SERVPRO of Alexandria

12/1/2015 (Permalink)

Keep Rainwater from Entering Your Attic

Although there are numerous things you can do to prevent your Alexandria home from deterioration and decay, using water damage prevention strategies is one of the most important measures you can implement. Learn more about the dangers of water damage and how to prevent it from adversely impacting your property by reading the short outline provided below by SERVPRO:

Why Water Damage Prevention Is So Important. Preventing water damage from occurring on your property is important for several reasons. Water damage can result in property deterioration such as wood rot to siding, fascias, and roof sheathing and trusses. Excessive moisture can lead to peeling paint. Preventative maintenance to your house's exterior will mitigate deterioration and lengthen the attractiveness and usefulness of your home. Finally, standing water can lead to a mold infestation that causes health issues for you and your household.

Water Damage Prevention Tips. Although water damage can have devastating and even deadly consequences, you can help prevent it from becoming a property issue by implementing these preventive strategies suggested by SERVPRO:

1. Foundation And Exterior Walls. Inspect for holes and cracks in your foundation and external walls. Be sure to look thoroughly in areas where conduits for plumbing or wiring are going through your exterior walls and then fill them up with the appropriate sealant. Keep a good protective water seal coating on the exterior, especially from grade level up to about three feet.

2. Roof. A shingle roof should be periodically inspected.  Be sure to replace or repair damaged shingles to preclude unwanted rainwater from seeping through into the supporting lumber. Keep gutters and downspouts clear of debris from leaves and other foreign matter to ensure efficient drainage. Be vigilant if ice dams should happen to begin building up on the gutters or trim.

3. Windows And Doors. Carefully examine the paint located on the frames of your doors and windows to identify any peeling. Peeling is an indication that water could have soaked in the structure's wood. Also check the caulking and paint for color flaws and swelling. A good coat of paint helps inhibit the absorption of water into door and window casings and trim work.

4. Basement. Be sure that your property's sump pump is functioning optimally. Also be sure that you have built-up barriers and flood shields for any doors or windows in the basement. Request SERVPRO to inspect your crawl space for moisture levels, and to install vents, poly, and dehumidifiers when necessary.

Happy Thanksgiving Central Louisiana

11/25/2015 (Permalink)

Thanksgiving is a day to enjoy football, food, friends and family.  Most importantly it is a day for us to give thanks for the people and blessings that fill our lives.  While Thanksgiving traditions vary between families, the turkey is the centerpiece of each and every home during the holiday.

With that in mind, if you decide to deep-fry your turkey, keep your family and house safe this Thanksgiving with these safe cooking tips.

-Always use a turkey fryer outside, away from buildings or other flammable materials

-Never use it on wooden decks or in garages

-Make sure the fryer is on flat ground before using to reduce the chance of tipping

-Never leave the fryer alone.  Most units lack thermostats, meaning an unwatched fryer will continue to heat until it bursts into flames

-Keep children and pets away from the fryer, even after you're done cooking, since the oil can remain hot for hours

-Don't overfill the fryer

-Use well-insulated potholders or oven mitts when touching pot or lid handles.  It is also recommended to wear safety goggles to avoid splatter

-Only cook a completely thawed turkey and be careful with marinades.  Oil and water don't mix, water could make the oil spill over, creating a fire or explosion

-If a fire does start, never use water to extinguish it.  If the fire is manageable, use an all-purpose fire extinguisher.

-If the fire grows, immediately call 9-1-1
